Publisher's Summary

One of Amazon’s Number-One Best Sellers of 2018

Jessica Pratt is only 10 when her world is destroyed. After witnessing unspeakable acts of violence, she flees for her life, becoming lost in the untamed California wilderness. Terrified and alone, she fights for survival as each step takes her further away from everything she has ever known.

For nearly a decade Jessica calls the mountain home until tragedy strikes once again. Forced to reenter a world that is controlled by men, Jessica transforms into Jesse for her own protection. Posing as a man, she ventures off the mountain for the first time in years and soon finds herself at the mercy of emotions beyond her control when she attracts the attention of a local singer.

Will Jesse be able to maintain the ruse she has created, or will she let down her guard and confess her true identity to an unlikely new love? And, what happens when she comes face to face with the demons from her past? Will she get the justice she desires?

Beautiful story

Wow. I’m not sure what I expected but this book took me much further than I thought it would. The first chapters were difficult to listen to, as the beginning of the story is very violent and painful but it has to be for Jesse to become who she is. Nothing is gratuitous. I’m glad I kept going. Also, the narrator’s voices for the various characters were really great.

Heart Wrenching Novel

I love lesbian period pieces so was excited when I found this book. I almost wish I would have waited to read the book. I don't say that due to it being a bad book the storyline was fantastic, I say that as there is very little happiness in this book. I cried so much reading the horrible things in this book and was really taken by the amount of violence written by this author. Being a woman I am se sensitive to rape scenes as I am sure many others are. I understand why the scenes called for the violence I just wish there was not so much detail with the rape portions. The premise of this book was a good one but this book could do with a lot more happiness. I felt at the end of the book the writer had had enough and just finished it as quickly as possible. Although the ending was sweet give us a few chapters of pure happiness to help relieve all of the sadness. I could not stop reading this book as I had to find laughter and happiness somewhere but if there was a scene with happiness it just a sentence or two. Meanwhile the details of what happened when she was 10 were not told once but two times, i actually skipped it the second time due to the incredible sadness. I don't understand why it was so important to the writer to have such horrible things done to women in this book. This is a work of fiction and it did not have to be so graphic, I could understand if it a true story and those were actual details but it was not. I wish I had some great way to discuss how amazing this book was but I am having a hard time but here goes: I am an avid reader of lesbian novels and as far as the storyline goes this book had it all, there is no doubt that the author is an experienced writer. The narrator was good as well with the different characters in the book so that is another thumbs up! The ONLY reason I only gave 3 stars was due to the graphic nature of the awful scenes in the book. It was simply to much for me to handle but I am just one person. If you are not sensitive to violence than you MUST get this book, but if you are sensitive to such scene than I would still get the book and forward past thise scenes.
Hope this review helps others if they decide if they want to read this book or not. I could not be anymore honest, I cried a lot while reading this book due to it's sadness but it is possible menopause made it worse..lol

Words can't express how much I enjoyed this book!

I typically don't read historical fiction, but I gave it a try because of the reviews. I was so surprised at how much I loved this book. It was very well written and a much needed breath of fresh air compared to my usual reading/listening. Well done!

This is a wonderful book! And so far as I’ve discovered, one of the better books included in the queer genre.

The Devil Between Us

Anyone thinking of reading or listening to The Devil Between Us needs to be aware that there are scenes of violence (sexual and otherwise) early on in the book. I knew this was the case prior to listening, but was not prepared for how the scenes would affect me. I paused the book just as these scenes were starting, and it took me a week to a week and a half to go back to it. Once I pushed through, the story had me until the end. The author is an excellent writer, and the narrator (for the most part) did a good job as well.

Fantastic story

Fantastic debut novel.
This is the story of Jessica, and all she had to endure to became the woman she was destined to be.
I was completely enthralled by the story. Could not put it down.
Highly recommend.
