Eddie Flynn used to be a con artist. Then he became a lawyer. Turns out the two aren't that different.

Former con artist turned lawyer Eddie Flynn gave up the law a year ago after a disastrous case, and he vowed never to step foot in a courtroom again. But now he doesn't have a choice. The head of the Russian mob in New York City, on trial for murder, has kidnapped Eddie's 10-year-old daughter: Eddie has to take this case whether he likes it or not.

Using his razor-sharp wit and every con, bluff, grift, and trick in the book, Eddie has only 48 hours to defend an impossible murder trial. And if he loses this case, he loses everything.

Critic reviews

"If you're a fan of John Grisham, Scott Turow, and Brad Meltzer, then you will be a fan of Steve Cavanagh's The Defense." (Nelson DeMille, number-one New York Times best-selling author of Radiant Angel)
"This audiobook goes from zero to ninety out of the box and doesn't flag until The End, so fasten your seat belt.... [Narrator] Adam Sims gives a bravura performance so at one with the text that you hardly notice he's there beside you on the edge of your seat." ( AudioFile)

It’s hard to believe that Mr. Cavanagh can keep this pace and engagement going through an entire book. This is the second time he’s done it for me, first was book #3 in this series, The Plea. And Adam Sims is the perfect narrator. Talk about having trouble sleeping instead of finding out what happens next. I prepared to be blown away so I downloaded #2, Thirteen, when I downloaded The Defense. Thank you for the entertainment Mr. C.

Amazing Writing and Narration

I loved Steve Cavanaugh’s “Kill For Me, Kill For You” so knew I needed to listen to this series. I’d heard the first book was slow so I’m thinking - if this is the slow one, I’m totally here for it. Loved this book from start to finish. Were there some far-fetched twists or happenings? Oh my, yes. But if you are reading to be intrigued and entertained, this book is a good choice!

Twisty Fun

Had me hooked as soon as it started. So many twists and turns. Could’ve finished this on a day it was good,

Suspenseful from the beginning!

Story premise was somewhat absurd and several things happen that you just roll your eyes but it was decently entertaining

It's okay

I initially picked up Thirteen by Steve Cavanaugh at a book store. After finishing it in an afternoon I knew I needed more from this author. I was ecstatic to learn that the book I had just finished was part of a series and I hadn’t even started from the beginning. I immediately downloaded Defense and finished it in less than 24 hours. I have already downloaded Plea but was sad to learn that the other books in this series aren’t on Audible. They are in German but not English. So if any execs from audible or anybody with power reads this review, PLEASE add more of these books onto audible and Steve, please keep writing.

Add more Steve Cavanaugh!

Was looking for something interesting to listen to when I stumbled upon the book Thirteen and The Pleas. I was interested but realized I would probably enjoy the books more if I started from the beginning. Risking wasting a lot of time and a book credit, I downloaded the Defense and never looked back! Wasn’t sure about the narrator in the first chapter but eventually I was engrossed - as a good audiobook will. Looking forward to the next books!

Great find and a new favorite legal series!

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator is fantastic and the characters, particularly the main character, Eddie, are very well written. I love a good strong main character and Eddie has it physically and mentally, the sort of lawyer you wish existed in real life or could be portrayed accurately on screen. The whole book happens in a matter of a couple of days which was kind of intense, but the dialogue is great and the storyline is interesting.

Intense, fast paced, interesting
