Publisher's summary

As Sheriff Piper Blackwell rushes to a clandestine meeting with an aging, paranoid veteran who believes spies are trailing his every move, she is caught in a fierce thunderstorm. Pounding rain drums against the bluff, washing away the earth and revealing a grisly secret someone tried to bury a long time ago.

Putting a name to the skeleton on the bluff, and searching for the thief who robbed the old veteran of his life’s earnings, sends Piper delving into the sleepy towns that dot her rural county. Now she’s digging into pasts perhaps best left alone.

Accompanied by Chief Deputy Oren Rosenberg, Piper seeks to expose a truth someone wants to remain forever hidden. The investigation may have started with a thunderstorm, but Piper aims to finish it and find justice. Uncovering fragments of Spencer County’s history could prove more dangerous - and deadlier - than she ever expected.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

While Jean Rabe has crafted a complex and satisfying plot — and yes, I fell for the red herring completely, the strength of her character development made this tale something special. Piper, the members of her department, the “Old Farts”, and the high school kids were absolutely real. I know those people or perhaps some just like them. Catherine Wenglowski’s performance was stellar, breathing life into the characters and enhancing their individual quirks. While this is the second installment in the Piper Blackwell series, it can stand alone, but do yourself a favor, and get the first one, The Dead of Winter, too.

Great Plot But the Language Got to Me

Honestly, I wanted to love this book and in many ways I did, but the amount of language was a huge turn off for me personally. I can deal with bad language but when it doesn't feel reasonable or realistic and is too frequently used I just can't do it. This book starts pretty quickly into lots of cussing and continued until I got about 1.5 hours in and G-damn was repeated pretty heavily intermixed with others and I had to stop. I will say the author did a fantastic job of bringing in creative, very colorful and fun characters with a interesting plot. The narrator also did a great job and was fun to listen to... I just wish the language was a bit cleaner.
