Publisher's Summary

Paddy Meehan is trawling the city for a story that will get her off the terrible night shift to which she's been consigned by her male colleagues. And then a woman, bleeding from a vicious head wound, offers her ÂŁ50 to leave her alone. The very next morning the woman is found dead. Only Paddy cares enough about what's really happened to pursue a dark and brutal truth that could make her career, or kill her.

Critic Reviews

"I hope the wonderful Paddy has an investigative career as long as Miss Marple's ahead of her." (Telegraph)
"Mina's detached but unsentimental view of man's inhumanity to man...never flinches, and her deadpan style serves her purpose well." (Guardian)

Good story marred by the narration

I down-loaded this book on the strength of a previous Denise Mina book I'd listened to. It's a good story but spoiled for me by the narrator. I see that another listener has commented on this. I wish I'd read her review and not down-loaded solely on the strength of the author! I found it difficult to concentrate on the story at first as I was mesmerized by the extraordinary reading style of the narrator: it wasn't the Glasgow accent, I'm used to this I'm Scottish, it was the weird intonation swinging down and ending sentences on an up. I persevered with the book and enjoyed the story, but I can't recommend it because of the narration.

Bad Readers

Denise Mina is a good writer but is badly let down by the reader of this book. Katy Anderson puts her inflections in the wrong places, pronounces corridor as corri-door and generally irritates the listener with a reading that is not fluid and seamless. I will not buy any books read by Katy Anderson.

Superb narration!

Katy Anderson really brings the story alive, totally immersive, and loved the feisty heroine, Paddy

Absolutely great read

Love the narrator, the story, the characters, the history. I feel like I know these people. I have a sense of what it must have been to live in that place, in that time. Thank you all for this story.
