All of these stories include children. The Daydreamer is the longest and might be good for a serious tween reader. Most of the other stories could be disturbing even for adults, and not appropriate for children. Topics include sexual assault, rape, incest, between siblings, murder, and tragic accidental death. At least one is over the top. You have been warned.

Certain short tales of daydreams I deeply enjoyed. Especially, William Cat. This story struck a nerve and I smiled throughout the entire thing.

Childhood imagination is not frivolous — it’s formative. The strange inner worlds children inhabit are how they process authority, identity, and growing up. McEwan treats fantasy not as whimsy but as emotional truth.
It’s a small book with large insight — gentle, slightly mischievous, and surprisingly profound about what it feels like to be a child on the edge of becoming someone else. Expert narration.

We all were once imaginative.
