But Eugene's life takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Tumbleweed Thompson, a gangly, red-haired boy who spins yarns about whaling voyages in the Atlantic and hidden stashes of gunpowder. My name is Chase Cooper, and I'm a 6th grade ninja. It's my first day at a different school and the only person I know is my cousin, Zoe (but she might be a little too cool for me). I was just another scrawny kid until a group of ninjas recruited me into their clan. It was a world of trouble I wasn't prepared for, which is why I kept this diary (or "chronicle" as my dad would call it) - to warn other kids about the dangers of becoming a ninja. They say history is destined to repeat itself...well, not if I can help it.

Great middle grade mystery story
This is a great middle grade kids’ book filled with adventure, hero kids, missing people, Jackalopes and a mystery mind controlling mastermind. It is a stand-alone story with the same main characters we met in Weirdbey Island book 1, The Pirates of Penn Cove. I loved how the story showed the kids fighting for what’s right, facing their fears and realizing that they are stronger than they think. The narrator used unique voices for the many characters and made the story fun to listen to. This book will easily keep kids engaged with its fast pace, suspense, great characters and splash of paranormal.

Think hardy boys meets sandlot meets supernatural
This is book two in the series can be read stand alone but will be better enjoyed having read the first one. So you have a small group of kids who have formed themselves into a club to hunt down the supernatural myths and legends Of their area. Perhaps though they have bit off more than they can choose in their quest for knowledge that is perhaps best lost. Enjoy this thrilling adventure and like me eagerly await the next of their adventures...fans of scooby doo will enjoy this without a doubt (even though there is no taking dog). Fun 2nd book in kids series -- Great narration
This is the second installment in the 'Wierdbey Island' series by Eldritch Black. It's a kids series with paranormal elements. I enjoyed the story in the first book better, but I'm coming to love the main protagonist and his three chums. I'm interested to see where the next adventure will take them. I was previewing this for my 7 year-old nephew. I think the series is a little advanced for him yet, but I'll hold onto it for him and share it when he's a couple of years older.
The narrator, J. Scott Bennett did a wonderful job throughout the book. He was able to use unique voices for the many characters, even a dreaded Jackalope!
Thanks to the author and narrator for a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

Another great story about Weirdbey Island
Love the story and the characters. There are some references to book one, but it is not necessary to listen to the first book to enjoy this one. However, we really enjoyed both books one and two.

More fun to be had on Weirdbey Island
This was a great follow up to The Pirates of Penn Cove. And once again, I really appreciated that it is a stand alone. It might help to have read The Pirates of Penn Cove, but I think one could start with this book and still follow along and enjoy it just fine.
The Day of the Jackalope seemed a bit more geared towards kids to me than the first one did, but even as a full grown adult I had a lot of fun experiencing it. Some nice themes about being yourself, and more importantly, the power of believing in yourself.
Scott Bennett, as usual, did a fabulous job with all the voices. While I missed the pirate accent from book one, there was a still a lot of great character voices to hear in this one.
I'm looking forward to hearing more from both Eldritch Black and Scott Bennett and the adventures of the Weirdbey Island gang!

For Stranger Things fans!
The Day of the Jackalope
Weirdbey Island, Book 2
By: Eldritch Black
Narrated by: J. Scott Bennett
OMG! This book is so fun! For fans of Strangers Things this could be your next favorite series! I sure wish this was on the screen! Much better than Goosebumps! Each of the main characters are so well developed and fit together perfectly! Each character is flawed but each with an awesomeness they alone possess. The world building is crazy good! Action, thrills, suspense to keep the heart pumping, and at the same time it's heartwarming!
This book has spotted a legendary Jackalope. A strange fellow in town is trying to get followers, lots and lots of rabbits, people go missing, a creepy mermaid skeleton washes up on shore, and so much more. The gang has a mystery, maybe more, to solve. What is going on in there town?
This is an amazing and awesome read with plenty of suspense and humor! Made for middle grades but so was Harry Potter. This is a book I loved and I am 60+! This book is so clever and witty! I giggled more than once listening to this. The suspense is just right, not too much but enough for a good story! I can't say enough about this book and this series!
The narrator is excellent! Not many people can really do comedy well and this narrator performs it perfectly! The voices for each person are each different and distinct. A man of many voices!
I picked this book up from freeaudiblecodes.

Interesting story
So honestly I began listening not realizing this was the second book of a series. This put me in an odd starting headspace as I had no clue what some of the references were and who all these established interactions were affecting.
Now that I’ve finished the book I can say that I’m not as concerned about not having read the first book. It probably would have helped the beginning make more sense initially, but by the middle I was totally fine. This was an odd tale in the sense of Alice in Wonderland type weird. The story had an odd pace but it was quick enough that it kept you interested. There wasn’t any profanity or inappropriate situations which leads me to think this would be a solid read for anyone who enjoys reading. Really you don’t kids might struggle or get a bit scared by the suspenseful bits, but really a 8 year old or older would enjoy this book no trouble. Despite my experience, definitely go back and read the first book first!
I’ve listened to other performances by the narrator and he has good rhythm and his voice differentiation could be better. He does have better differentiation when he does accents or stronger pitch differences.

No Rest This Summer
Years before Captain Grimdire arose from the depths to claim his ship and his treasure, a darker evil was already laying the ground work for a complete takeover of Whidbey Island. But Whidbey is merely the starting point. This Dark Evil wants to hold the world in its clutches like …like a bunch of carrots.
I was given a copy of this audio book for my unbiased review. Eldritch Black’s second novel in his Weirdbey Island series is a treat. He sets the stage early as his hero Dylan is fooled by his older brother. However, being fooled once, Dylan learns quickly to question what he thinks is true.
“You need to learn to think for yourself.”
“If you know yourself, they can’t control you.”
“Never rely on hope.”
Once the game is afoot, the action builds and the reader is left to wonder if Dylan, Jacob, Emily and the ever big talking Zack can defeat the Dark Evil.
Younger readers will get carried away in the action. Older readers will recognize a wry sense of humor…and STILL get caught up in the action. In Blacks’s first novel in this series, The Pirates Of Penn Cove, I feel he, like his readers, was just getting to know his gang of four. In this second installment, I sense that he knows his gang better and they are developing into an intelligent group of investigators. I look forward to more adventures should they survive this one. There’s trees missing, after all. This will not do.

Are Jackalopes real?
This is the second book in the Weirdbey Island series, but can be read as a standalone. The intrepid group of kids from the first book is once again involved in a supernatural event and has to save everyone on Whidbey (Weirdbey) Island from the danger of a mind-controlling visitor to the Island. People are disappearing, but nobody seems to be concerned. Also, a huge tent has appeared in town and residents are flocking to see the mysterious fortune-teller. Everybody who visits the tent leaves extremely happy, shouting that they are going to be rich. But, Dylan and his friends don't think that the happiness or predictions of fortunes are real.
When Dylan encounters what appear to be a Jackalope in the woods, he and his friends decide that they are the only ones who can figure out what is really going on. But will they be able to get to the bottom of the mysterious happenings before all of their family and friends become mind-controlled rabbits?
I am much older than the target age for this series, but I find these books to be hugely entertaining. Eldritch Black has a wonderful writing style and keeps the pace moving rapidly to keep younger readers engaged. He also has his characters facing their fears and realizing that they are stronger than they think, which is a good lesson for all of us. The narrator, J. Scott Bennett, does a great job with his performance and added a lot to my enjoyment of the book. I would recommend this book for readers/listeners of all ages, especially those who are fans of books like those in the "Goosebumps" series.
I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of this book by the author/publisher/narrator and chose to review it.
