Publisher's summary

A collective amnesia strikes the globe, deleting our memories for all the events and people that make us who we are. If our past weighs us down, does forgetting it free us?

Set in the present, this high-concept thriller follows the intertwined fates of an intense war correspondent (Max) and an offbeat con artist (Chen), as they piece together their lives and save each other in the back alleys of Los Angeles.

It is Max who follows a lead all the way to Antarctica, where he finds trouble, then horror, and finally the cause of the global catastrophe. Award-winning audiobook actor Matt Addis breathes fire into the two wildly different protagonists.

Editorial Reviews: An action-packed adventure loaded with humor. Max is an intense, intellectual reporter scoping out the most sought-after story to the ends of the earth. Chen is an Asian-American L.A. street kid, quick on his feet, and looking to exploit the situation.

Their lives become inadvertently linked as the collective amnesia blankets their identities, forces them to change, and pulls them into a pact. A fast-paced romp for fans of Ludlum’s Bourne Identity, Michael Crichton, Ken Follett, Tom Clancy, particularly those who enjoy some serious humor to spice up the suspense.

A Must Listen for our Moment!

The Day of Forgetting is the perfect antidote to our current circumstances. The timing of The Day of Forgetting is uncanny--this page turner engages with humor, science, and a cast of characters that will leave readers wanting to hug and smack them--sometimes at the same time! The Day of Forgetting is a mystery--or a puzzle--that moves along toward a denouement that will surprise, delight, and satisfy. All the while listeners will wonder how in the world Stephenson has managed to write the perfect pandemic novel while most of the world wrestles with COVID-19. A must listen for our time.

A Perfect Thriller for This Pandamic

A psychological thriller about an amnesia pandemic. A balanced mix of drama, humor and suspense. Two gripping and opposite characters, Chen and Max, in the search and the rediscovery of themselves during the pandemic. A fascinating and a fast-read story true to our time.

World event, excitement!

This book was interesting, leaving you with questions of "what if"? The characters were real, believable and I found myself rooting for them to thrive and do the right thing. This story line centers around a world event that is a total population amnesia. No one remembers their lives before this event happens. While everyone is trying to piece together who they are, a journalist, Max, is trying to figure out what happened. He takes a trip to the supposed epicenter (Antarctica) and the intrigue begins. I was absolutely hooked. Although I would have like to find out what was in the "envelope", I know why this was not possible for the main characters mental health. Kudos to the narrator, the voices were easily distinguishable and he did a great job! Thumbs up for this "on the edge of your seat" kind of book.

Fast, Fun, and Hard to turn off

This story was a great, fast-paced escape about a sudden onset of unexplained amnesia. It was original, intelligent, and funny - right up until it was suspenseful and frightening - and then I really couldn't stop listening. I also appreciated the ending. Great performance by the narrator. Try it - you will be glad you did.

Cinematic, pandemic thrill ride!

An up-to-the-minute storyline were everything feels heightened and accelerated, including the speed with which fact overtakes fiction, and a truth can mutate into a lie. I did not want to put it down! Narrator, Mr. Matt Addis will have you captivated with his impeccable characterizations and flawless delivery; a sequestering you won’t want to end. This cinematic, fast-paced journey into the parallel stories that transform the two Maxs’ after a global pandemic is smart, fun and timely.
