Editorial reviews

Heather O'Neil brilliantly voices Stuart Hill's well-drawn characters and the many races that populate the military fantasy that begins the award-winning Icemark Chronicles. From the young warlock, at once playful and wise, to the willful redheaded warrior he needs to ground as she seeks alliances with vampires, werewolves, and the other creatures of the Land of the Ghosts, O'Neil's rich accent lends a magic, a gravity, and an authenticity to the history of Hill's beautifully realized realm.

The battles are thrilling and dramatically performed in this acclaimed tale of the young queen who must stand against an invading force seeking to eradicate her home - and learn a lot about humanity and courage along the way.

Publisher's summary

After the death of her beloved father, headstrong princess Thirrin Freer Strong-In-The-Arm becomes warrior queen of her homeland, Icemark, defending it from a formidable invader. Despite Thirrin's bravery and the support of Oskan, the Witch's son, the task proves more difficult than Thirrin ever dreamed. She must assemble a force to rival her opponent. And, in the chill winter of Icemark, she only has until spring to unite the strange beasts and frightening creatures who live just outside her country. Ultimately, it is Thirrin's vision and determination that will see her through to victory.

Critic reviews

"Heather O'Neill is especially terrific voicing the alternating self-doubt and confidence of young Thirrin." ( AudioFile)

Hmmmm

Well, first I don't think I realized this was meant for kids. It wasn't so bad that I stopped listening. But, by the end, if I heard "I'm Thirrin Freer Strong-In-The-Arm, Wildcat of the North!" one more time, I think I would shoot myself. The story was fine, but I wish I had listened to something else...

I finally got my husband to love books

I read this book a long time ago and I love how it was brought to life. My husband loved it, and got so into it that he's gone from groaning when I mention books to looking forward to them more than I do. the story was amazing, and it was great to 'read' it again after so long to gain a more mature and profound appreciation for the story as a whole and all of its details. One of the best books I've ever read.

Well done.

This book was an enjoyable YA epic fantasy that kept me involved for the duration. Well written, interesting characters interplay in a struggle for a kingdom's survival. Be prepared for a number of battle scenes.

One of my all time favorites

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I absolutely would. I read Cry of the Icemark when I was just a kid, i loved it then and I love it now. It's a good old fashion high adventure novel. It has comedy and tragedy, action and just a hint of romance.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that the characters are believably flawed.

What does Heather O'Neill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Overall I liked the narration. There were a few character voices that made me cringe, but they weren't main characters. I loved what she did with the werewolves, and I really enjoyed how well she portrait the main character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several moments that truly moved me, but I don't want to mention them for fear of spoilers.

Any additional comments?

This book is really well done. It shows the violence of a mid evil/roman world in such a way that is moving but not graphic. I read it with my little sister and some of our younger cousins and it started some great thought provoking discussions for them.

I would like to note that though this is the beginning of a series and the second two books are not available that is in no way a problem. The book is completely wraps itself up.

I love this colorful telling of Cry of the Icemark

The Cry of the Icemark Series was the first set of books that got me excited to read for pleasure. I was never really a lover of books, This creative series kept my attention. I reread it at times to remember the series that started my love of reading! Now I read every day!!!

Love the story, hate the narrator

I’ve always loved this book, but I tried the audible version so I could reread on the way to work. The opening scene is a fight. The author killed all the momentum and reads like she reading a text book. Totally ruined the experience. I only got a couple pages in before I had to quit. Maybe I’m just used to Jim Dale with the Harry Potter books (which I just finished rereading) and the bar is high, but that was just terrible . Please find another narrator that can do this story justice.

Excellent story

My only frustration is that the other novels in the series aren't available in the US :(

Loved the book as a teen and still do as an adult

Love the book, narration was well done, but where is the rest of the series?
