Publisher's summary

Everyone has secrets, but some can change your life forever....

In the midst of the Second World War, Eva receives the devastating news that her husband is missing and presumed dead. Neither wife nor widow, she lives in a numb state of limbo until, in the heat of an English summer, she meets Bill, a black American GI. Despite their vastly different backgrounds, neither can deny the love that overcomes them in the frantic weeks that follow, when every day could be their last.

After Eva discovers she's pregnant, Bill is shipped off to join the D-Day fight, leaving her alone in a bigoted world. As her mixed-race daughter, Louisa, grows up, how far will Eva go to keep her safe and bury the past? And how far will Louisa go to uncover the truth?

Stilted Narration Spoiled the Experience

I, of all people, should have loved this Audible book. As the mother of two mixed-race sons, I wanted to love it! The narrator, however, greatly detracted from my enjoyment.

If only I could rate this a MILLION stars...

SPEECHLESS. That is exactly what this story has left me. From the very beginning until the very end...not a stone left unturned, not a question left unanswered, and not a single emotion left hanging in the lurches. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!! Thank you for taking us so deeply into the lives and hearts of each and every character!!!

Entertaining

The story at several points is unbelievable. I found myself thinking, no one is that stupid. I did want to keep listening and see how it ended. It's like an entertaining trash novel.

Loved it

This book brings you through generations of a family who were the subject of prejudice. No spoilers.

memories

I lived through the times. just as same as the main character.my mother white and my father black.MY completion passed as white, however I had chosen to mark negro on applications. Now I know better had I chosen white my credit score would have been higher and I would have been accepted into society without any trouble.Society is still the same today as it was in the. 1940 s and up to this day. It's a sad thing.se la 've. what will be will be.. i'm not bitter just somewhat disappointed.

So engaging, I could not stop listening!

Written with passion and compassion, and performed impeccably. The truth is never just black or white.

Some secrets should not be kept

This very human story reveals how destructive secrets can be. The author fleshes out the characters so believably, drawing the reader fully into their world and making it hard to leave! It is unfortunate that the narrator, while performing all dialog extremely well, is otherwise unable to vary her expression in the narrative sections. I almost did not continue listening by the end of the first 30 minutes but then got caught up in the characters' drama.

Great story but audio voice is messed up!

Loved the story-about a love story that produced a bi racial girl in a world where there were no other minorities, and her life of difficulties due to layers of secrets.
The problem with the overall audio of this book was that suddenly, the main character & all the characters to follow begins to speak with a Jamaican lilt- yet no one was from the Caribbean or elsewhere outside of Louisiana USA, Wales, or either Germany or England....

Not a great story

I made it to chapter 8 and couldn't stand any more. Not a believable story from WWII era. Ugh, was exhausting to listen to o.

Disappointing

This book was tough to listen to due to rather poor narration and unconvincing accents. Unfortunately this did nothing to help the story which was predictable.
