Reddick runs a criminal empire from the neighborhood known as The Bowery and has a house on Mulberry Street which serves as his headquarters.
Reddick is into just about everything illegal there is, but as a Secret Service Agent, Kent is interested only in his counterfeiting operation.
Armed with a cover story that he was in prison with a forger in Reddick’s employ, Kent is brought into the fold as a forger. Over time he gains Reddick’s trust and the love of Riddick’s house maid, a woman named Polly, who was purchased from her father over am unpaid debt.
Once Kent is trusted enough for Reddick to take him on trips to meet his contacts who buy the counterfeit money, Kent is confident Reddick’s arrest is imminent.
Except that Reddick has other ideas. In California where Reddick and Kent are supposed to meet a buyer for the counterfeit money, a trap is set for Kent and he is left for dead.
Taken to the woods by Reddicks’s men, Kent manages to escape but is seriously wounded. He is found by a widow named Dorothy and her son George and they nurse him back to health on their farm.
Once Kent is healthy again, he travels back to New York with vengeance in his heart.
