Publisher's summary

Spoony is a kid with a heart of gold. He loves hugs, he loves affection, and he values friendship and family. But there is something about him that isn’t quite right. He can’t kick a ball, he can’t play Duck Duck Goose, and he confuses regular people for clowns. He thinks a fictitious character on an old TV show is his dad, and he just has a general way of ruining things for other people while remaining blissfully unaware.

His mom isn’t much better. Embarrassed by the drunken one-night stand that created Spoony, she has perpetrated numerous lies to save face and avoid humiliation over the truth that Spoony’s father real father is the lanky Burt Peppermill, and that an overindulgence of lime flavored Jell-O shooters led her to lower her standards enough to let him touch her in that way. All her lies, however, come crashing down on them both the day Spoony finally kicks a ball in P.E. class, resulting in a trip to the emergency room where a number of surprises await.

The Chronicles of Spoony, Vols. 1-3 offer delightfully dark reminders of how our words and actions around children shape their beliefs and affect their lives in profound and often invisible ways.

Had me laughing out loud

The book is very humorous and entertaining. The author is a masterful storyteller and was able to naturally weave humor throughout the book in a manner where the bits of profanity didn't add humor for me. There are plenty of scenes consisting of vivid images that will allow the reader or listener to use their imagination and laugh out loud.

The narrator was able to capture the author’s intent by bringing the book to life through the spoken word. The narrator did a marvelous job bringing out the hilarious tibits of the story of Spoony ensuring that the timing of each spoken word brought humor out just as the author had intended. I listened to Spoony on my commute to and from work and I must warn others that there were times that I almost pulled to the side of the road because I was laughing so hard and feared that I might cause an accident.

5 plus stars!! There are very few humorous books I’ve read or listened to that have me laughing. Hoping for a follow on book!

A very different take on storytelling.

This kid can’t catch a break. If you can get through the initial shock value presented early in the book, then you will see how the issue really isn’t Spoony. He is the one that everyone could learn something from. Yes, Spoony lacks a filter to his thoughts before they leave his mouth, but so does everybody around him. The only difference is that he maintains a level of genuine innocence and pure goodness that his classmates and adults are sorely lacking.

The narrator’s sense of humor woven into the audiobook brings this story to life. Listening to the audiobook draws you in, which allows you to build a connection to Spoony and develop a level of empathy that is not given to him by those who are a part of his everyday life. You will feel like you are the member of a sitcom audience as you listen to this story. Elements of Spoony’s life parallel the character Barney Stinson on the show, “How I Met Your Mother”, and how he was led to believe by his mother that a famous person on TV was his father.

Think your life is a mess? Spoony’s got you beat. Grab a seat, get yourself a bowl of popcorn ready, and listen in on an overabundance of dark secrets worthy of a soap opera script that will leave your eyes wide as saucers and mouth hanging open in shock.

Everyone Knows a Spoony

This is the kid who does things in their own way - not necessarily trying to be funny or rude but the way they get on the nerves of others is quite funny. Most enjoyable story.
