Editorial review

By Seth Hartman, Audible Editor

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA IS A CULTURAL TOUCHSTONE FOR THE AGES

When I think of The Chronicles of Narnia, I am transported to my childhood bedroom at the impossibly late hour of 9:30 PM. My dad is squinting at his yellowed 1976 edition of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, dust kicking up into the air with each turn of the page. As he speaks of fauns, stone tablets, and Turkish Delight, my little brain is working on overdrive to make sense of it all.

All seven books in the series have vastly different storylines, main characters, points of view, and in the case of the audio version, a different narrator for each title. For most Narnia fans, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is the first book they experience, and it's also the best known book in the series. In later editions of the series (including this one), The Magician’s Nephew is considered to be the first book since it takes place much earlier in the canon, starring a young Professor Digory Kirke as he discovers Narnia. I started this series with Wardrobe, however. The story of siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy stumbling upon a magical land and taking on the evil White Witch is nothing short of a timeless classic. With the mighty lion Aslan and the kind faun Mr. Tumnus on their side, these four children are tested and forced to mature quickly in order to rise to the challenge.

While it certainly transports the reader into a highly conceptual fantasy world, the secret sauce to this series is the stellar character writing. Put simply, each of the four children represents one major character archetype: Peter is brave and headstrong, Susan is wise and resourceful, Edmund is agreeable and easily manipulated, and Lucy is kind and loyal. As a kid, I found myself admiring Lucy’s grit and determination in difficult situations. These character outlines may be basic, but author C.S. Lewis uses them to great effect, weaving complex character dynamics while keeping it simple enough for anyone to follow along. While the four children do not appear in all seven books, these sorts of character tropes live on with each trip to this magical and faraway land.

The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

Big Stars for a Big Collection

So happy to get this entire collection for 1 credit! There are no new recordings in this set but it is a impressive gathering

Chapter 50-64 / Prince Caspian  / Narrated by Lynn Redgrave

Chapter 65-80 / The Voyage of the Dawn Treader / Narrated by Derek Jacobi

You must have this

I read the Chronicles of Narnia as a kid and it was always one of my favorites. I read the series to my kids. I have no idea why they call this the Adult Box Set but everyone needs it. While all the narrators were at least very good I have to say my favorite is Patrick Stewart. How can you go wrong, 34 hours of one of the greatest stories for one credit.

An enchanting journey back to my teens

Kudos to the person who put together this lineup of stellar narrators for this classic series!

Every actor brought his/her personality to the book he/she narrated and I was more than happy to treat each book as its own story and performance, instead of nit-picking pronunciations and other grievances shared by other reviewers.

I'm enjoying this audio series over and over again.

Very good, but in the wrong order

These are my favorite books of all time. The performers did a great job with them, and it was therapeutic to my soul to hear the stories brought to life so well. My only complaint is that they are read in chronological order rather than the order that the books were published. So basically the “prequel” is read first in a couple of different instances, and the whole point of a prequel is to go back in time and reveal some of the mysteries put forth in earlier stories, so when you read the prequel first, it spoils that effect. I have seen these books presented in print in that same order and am always confused as to why this is done. But oh well, they are wonderful stories in any order.

my childhood, read to me

When you spend your early years searching for Narnia in every cupboard in your house, there is no greater feeling of gratitude than to have these magical stories read to you by people like Lynn Redgrave or Kenneth Branagh or Patrick Stewart.

Although some notions are a bit dated (these were written in the 50's after all) these books stand the test of time. And yes, the Christian overtones are blatantly apparent (which some people feel put off by) but one cannot dispute that these references are interspersed with so much magical and pagan mythology they form a bigger, denser, and more beautiful realm than either could do independently. (As a solitary eclectic Wiccan, i feel pretty strongly about my mythology 😉)

Well Narrated

Very talented narrators. They made the book very enjoyable and I hope my 8 year old niece will enjoy it more than I have.

FANTASTIC!!!

I LOVE the Chronicles of Narnia and had read the tales before, but there was something magical and moving in hearing the Audible renditions by many of my favorite actors of Great Britain!! Get this book. You will NOT regret it. I’ll definitely listen again.
