Publisher's Summary
An unforgettable journey of discovery....
Federica is moved from Chile to Cornwall when her parents separate, and all she has left of the relationship she cherished with her father is a wooden box, which has a secret beauty hidden within. Swiftly embraced into the eccentric Appleby family, it isn’t long before Federica falls for her friend’s older brother, Sam, who barely notices the little girl until it is too late....
Years later, from the sanctuary of a seemingly perfect marriage, Federica embarks on a painful journey of self-discovery. Will she finally learn the true lesson of the butterfly box?

Soporific and nonsensical
The story starts slowly and grinds down to practically a full stop within the first chapter. The narration is dull but very useful in sending you off to sleep. I very rarely write scathing reviews on someone else’s attempt to entertain others through whatever medium, however, on this occasion, I felt it only fair to warn others. Save yourselves and save yourself a credit.

Took a long time getting there
I’ve read/listened to all Santa Montefiore’s books and she is a wonderful story teller. Somehow though with this i couldn’t get into the characters and it seemed like a long winded story recounting lots of separate events which didn’t really tie up with the main story line. It was an easy listening ramble but not her best for me anyway.

A Beautiful Story Portrayed with Excellence
The voice over actress is very talented and enriches this wonderful story in its telling. I highly recommend this heartwarming story that also has gritty, adult parts in it.

Junk food reading
Well if that’s what you want, this is the book for you. A bit like an old Woman’s Weekly short story (if you’re of the vintage to remember that). Predictable, full of cringeworthy stereotypes, neatly tied up with a bow and coming to a tightly constructed ending. But having indulged in it, (and it’s a long enough listen) I’m going on a sugar-free diet for quite a while. Not even in the category of guilty pleasure. Not for me.

Another fab story from Santa!
Another great story, although it took quite a while to get going. Perhaps not as good as other Santa books I have read. However, still a great listen.

Loved it!
A wonderful story woven so cleverly with love, romance, drama and wisdom. No other narrator would do it such justice as Juanita McMahon.
BTW, the Peruvian girl found in the mountain in 1990's was Juanita de Arequipa. She was one of many pure, beautiful young girls sent to a special home to live their short lives knowing they would be sacrificed to the 'gods'.
A volcanic eruption, nearby, spewed ash into her mountain and partially melted the ice, where 2 explorers discovered her 500 years after she died there.
She now resides in USA and visits Arequipa, Peru (where she was found) once a year in her special climate-controlled box for display. I lived in Arequipa for a few years and was lucky enough to see her, and learn her story. Her hair, flesh and nails are still preserved.
Many other children and their belongings have been found also.
