The New York Times bestseller and “horror masterpiece” (NPR) from Stephen Graham Jones—the master of modern horror—is a chilling historical horror novel tracing the life of a vampire who haunts the fields of the Blackfeet reservation looking for justice.

“Jones has written his Interview with the Indigenous Vampire. A landmark of horror and historical fiction alike, perhaps the closest thing we have to horror’s Moby-Dick.” —Vulture

“Inventive and spine-tingling…a master class in voice. Queasy, uneasy, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter plays with the interplay between religion and historical guilt, identity and appetite.” —The Washington Post

A diary, written in 1912 by a Lutheran pastor is discovered within a wall. What it unveils is a slow massacre, a chain of events that go back to 217 Blackfeet dead in the snow. Told in transcribed interviews by a Blackfeet named Good Stab, who shares the narrative of his peculiar life over a series of confessional visits. This is an American Indian revenge story written by one of the new masters of horror, Stephen Graham Jones.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Listeners don’t just experience a fascinating historical drama—they also become steeped in a bloody gothic Western. Stellar performances are the center of this compelling listening experience. Narrator Marin Ireland fully embodies the beleaguered humanities professor who, while deep diving into the campus archive, discovers the story of her ancestors. At the same time, she is struggling with her tenure committee. In a deft transition back to 1912, Owen Teale’s performance of a Lutheran pastor exhibits gravitas as he slowly unwinds the secrets of his relationship with Good Stab, a Blackfeet Indian who mysteriously appears in his congregation. Shane Ghostkeeper provides Good Stab with a subtle yet ferocious performance as the two face each other’s buried truths. Complete with creative production touches, the result is a dark, satisfying listen."

I chose “The Buffalo Hunter Hunter” as an audiobook knowing the writing style wouldn’t suit me. The narration was top notch! I felt like I was sitting around a fire just listening to Good Stab (Weasel Plume/Fullblood/Takes No Scalps) and Three Persons/Arthur Beaucarne relaying this tale. Their voices were somehow soothing even though the story was anything but. I enjoyed Etsy’s portion a bit less, but she didn’t have nearly as big a part anyway. I can honestly say, had I chosen the written version, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it at all and wouldn’t have gotten past a couple of chapters. I pretty much knew this in advance. If you struggle with the Indian language/references (like me) especially in written form, I would highly recommend the audiobook. The story in that form is captivating, the narration hauntingly melodic, and tragic.

Superb narration that was hauntingly melodic

In this beautifully written horror novel you get multiple genres for the price of 1. You get Native American mythology, a fresh take on the vampire, a Western, an Epistolary, a thriller, and at its core, pure Horror. Mr. Jones has taken one of America's darkest chapters and deftly demonstrated its true monstrous nature in a way that borders on satire. And he's done this while still delivering a story that compels the reader with a plotline that is difficult to disengage from when the reading must be done for the day. I can't say enough good things about this book. I enjoyed it much in the same way that I enjoyed Seth Grahame-Smith's "Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter." As for the narration, I enjoyed it mostly. Owen Teale's Welsh accent muddied a few words but overall his actor's instincts really made Arthur's character come alive for me. Marin Ireland was good too. But Shane Ghostkeeper?...perfection.

Beautifully Written Horror

I spent more time asking what is going on with this book and the production then listening to the story. Is it a horror story, Is it a cowboy story, Is it just a journal written by an illiterate? While the story was confusing it did keep my interest but the performance was just too much. Are you reading it? Are you performing it? Is it a dramatization? Oh, apparently it's all three. I enjoyed the narrators but the producer ruined it for me. I wanna book it is either read, acted, or dramatized. Not one that skips back-and-forth between all three. I think I would've enjoyed the story more if I had read it myself.

What's going on?

I loved every little detail about this story, and the audio production kicks it up a notch. I cannot recommend this audiobook enough.
