Publisher's summary

A special treat to warm your heart, just in time for the holidays - a sparkling new novel from New York Times best-selling author Fern Michaels....

Christmas is more than just a celebration for Lauren Montgomery. For generations, it’s been her family’s livelihood. Their Christmas shop, Razzle Dazzle Décor, has seen seasonal fads come and go, but there’s one trend they can’t escape. Online superstores are swallowing their sales, and this Christmas season will need to be their best ever if the store is to stay in business.

To help keep the shop afloat, Lauren also has a sideline, writing biographies for business figures. She’s thrilled when her literary agent contacts her with a new proposal - before learning that the subject will be none other than John Gerald Giompalo. He’s the titan behind Globalgoods.com, the online retailer that has spelled doom for hundreds of small businesses just like Razzle Dazzle Décor. Despite her misgivings, Lauren travels to Seattle to confer with the mogul, and is caught off guard when his son, John Jr., attends the meeting too. Handsome, intelligent, and deeply kind, he’s perfect - apart from the fact that he’s part of the company threatening everything Lauren loves.

As her deadline, and Christmas, draw closer, Lauren knows that there’s more than her family’s shop at stake. Her heart is, too. But there’s no better time than the holidays to make a secret wish on the brightest star you see - and let the season’s magic take hold.

Off the rails but enjoyable

The characters were endearing and I actually enjoyed listening to the story where the plot lines just got totally crazy. You don’t read these kind of books for realism but this one was way out there. Having said this I really enjoyed it And perhaps I should up the stars a little bit because we are not analyzing the literary merit of the book just how much we enjoyed it, right 😉

Lovely Story

What a great story of family, love and friendship. Did not want it to end, was in love with all of the characters. The narration was on point. Great job.

Very enjoyable!

Beautiful small town, heartfelt story.
I loved that the story didn't drag on without compromising the storyline.
Great narration.

Interesting Storyline

I admired the main character being a successful woman writer yet also having a humble nature and helping with her parents’ small business.

Strangely paced

This book could have been half as long as it is. Way too much time and detail were spent in the first half of the book about the store and Lauren’s relationship with her parents and too little in the second half about her relationship with John and his family. It was strange, as I know Fern Michaels is a successful author. I thought this was poorly done. The narration was just ok. The voice sounds like an old lady, not the youthful 35 of the character.

Fat phobic

This was the worst holiday-themed novel I’ve downloaded. The story dragged on and on and then suddenly wrapped up very quickly. The part I could not stand was how often the main character talked about skipping meals, being thin, not over indulging, maintaining her figure, etc. Such unhealthy body image issues being projected here! It was gross to listen to - the kind of shaming conversation I would not ever want to be part of and certainly would not want to normalize by putting in a book without addressing how to get help. I only finished this book because I hoped there would be something redeeming about the fat phobic main character and her mother, but no. It was a just a lame dragged out holiday romance with some lovely self loathing tossed in before an absurdly rushed happy ending.

Dragged on

Majority of the novel focuses on Lauren Montgomery. It was hard to relate to her because at 35 she still lets her father dictate too much of her life. Yes, she moved back to help her parents and lives in their house. She sneaks internet service into her bedroom for her book deal. Good grief, I couldn’t imagine my daughters who are in their 30s asking for permission if they were paying the bill.
Next issue was the romance unbelievable. Love at first sight with rainbows and sunshine. There was zero character development of John. The writer tells us about the chemistry but the reader doesn’t experience it at all.

Fat shaming, cruel and shallow

Pretty much stopped listening when the protagonist called her friend and they fat-shamed another woman and were all around mean girls. Yuck. These are 35 year old women. All the comments saying “wholesome” I guess we have different ideas about what wholesome means.

Christmas feel

Sweet story. Nice characters. Disliked the way the author viewed food, waist line and made fun of fat people.
