Publisher's Summary

In a world that seems so troubled, how do we hold on to hope?

This program is read by the authors and includes a bonus PDF.

Looking at the headlines - the worsening climate crisis, a global pandemic, loss of biodiversity, political upheaval - it can be hard to feel optimistic. And yet hope has never been more desperately needed.

In this urgent audiobook, Jane Goodall, the world's most famous living naturalist, and Douglas Abrams, the internationally best-selling coauthor of The Book of Joy, explore through intimate and thought-provoking dialogue one of the most sought-after and least understood elements of human nature: hope. In The Book of Hope, Jane focuses on her "Four Reasons for Hope": The Amazing Human Intellect, The Resilience of Nature, The Power of Young People, and The Indomitable Human Spirit.

Drawing on decades of work that has helped expand our understanding of what it means to be human and what we all need to do to help build a better world, The Book of Hope touches on vital questions, including: How do we stay hopeful when everything seems hopeless? How do we cultivate hope in our children? What is the relationship between hope and action? Filled with moving and inspirational stories and photographs from Jane’s remarkable career, The Book of Hope is a deeply personal conversation with one of the most beloved figures in the world today.

While discussing the experiences that shaped her discoveries and beliefs, Jane tells the story of how she became a messenger of hope, from living through World War II to her years in Gombe to realizing she had to leave the forest to travel the world in her role as an advocate for environmental justice. And for the first time, she shares her profound revelations about her next, and perhaps final, adventure.

The second audiobook in the Global Icons series - which launched with the instant classic The Book of Joy with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu - The Book of Hope is a rare and intimate look not only at the nature of hope, but also into the heart and mind of a woman who revolutionized how we view the world around us and has spent a lifetime fighting for our future.

There is still hope, and this book will help guide us to it.

A visionary leader inspires again

Thank you for the hope this generated in my own life. I heard her talk about these reasons for hope during a lecture 2 years ago and was inspired. Hearing Jane go into more depth with new stories was welcome.

This book fits into Jane’s impressive catalogue of other books yet it is something different and special. The “conversation” style of the book between Doug and Jane is thought provoking and full of color.

If anyone is still reading this review here’s some inspiration… I find it beyond inspiring that during this pandemic Jane has taken the most advantage of video calls of anyone on the planet. She is in her words “busier and more exhausted than ever “. THANK YOU JANE.

An Incredible Human Being of the Ages

Dear Jane,

You have been a role model for me since I was a young girl and now in my 60’s you are even more so. Your voice ringing out your message of hope out through the airwaves is incredibly powerful and moving asking all of us to do our part: “We can and we will!”

Thank you for selflessly sharing a lifetime of your indomitable spirit with the creatures great and small on our beautiful home we call Earth. We, all of us, are better off for it.

I can and I will!

With deep appreciation and gratitude,

Laurie McCracken Alsted

Simple in style, Elegantly spun

This will certainly demand a repeat performance.
It is the plainspoken truth about her life's work.
I loved it.
I loved Her.
Mr. Abrams was spot on as he facilitated this interview.

Amazing narration

I love Jane Goodall and, during these increasingly difficult times, was looking for something to give me hope. I don't even remember how I found this book as I had never heard of it before scrolling through Audible. It made me laugh and cry and so much more. I typically only stick to works of fiction, but after reading (listening to) this, I am willing to branch out more. The fact that it was narrated by the authors made it even more special. I felt very connected to them almost as if I was a part of their conversation. Please listen to this book!

A conversation with Jane

I liked listening to this book because of how it was a discussion between Jane and Doug. By the end, I felt like I was a part of their conversation, that I had gotten to know a bit about them both.

Definitely what we all need to read

I enjoyed listening to this book thoroughly. Jane’s voice is soothing to listen to and she brings forth so many wise points of view (ones that I believe in,too.) It amazes me that she is as old as she is and has done so much in her life. I will hate the day that I hear she has died. We need to have more people like her in this world and more books like this to give us HOPE.

This is an amazing book

The dialogue between Jane and Doug is thought provoking and inspiring. I’ve listened to other books on audible and this is the best produced in my experience. The included PDF with pictures is a wonderful touch. Thank you Jane and Doug for your authenticity, your wisdom, and of course your hope.
