NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The breathtaking conclusion to Philip Pullman’s landmark new trilogy The Book of Dust! Return to the world of His Dark Materials and discover what fate has in store for Lyra, “one of fantasy’s most indelible heroines” (The New York Times Magazine).

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Horn Book, The Boston Globe Blue Ribbon Awards List

“Pullman’s abilities as a storyteller are stupendous, and on full display.”—The Atlantic

“Tremendously entertaining.”—Slate

Lyra Silvertongue is alone in a city haunted by daemons, searching for her beloved Pan. Malcolm Polstead isn’t far behind, searching for Lyra. And they are both racing toward the desert of Karamakan, following the trail of roses said to hold the secret of Dust.

Their allies and enemies are converging on the mysterious red building at the heart of the desert: Marcel Delamare and the military might of the Magisterium; the radical Men from the Mountains; scientists, scholars, and spies; troops of witches and other people of the air. And awaiting them all is a previously unseen and chilling new threat that will change everything.

The intertwining odysseys of Malcolm and Lyra, their journeys both internal and external, will test their limits and challenge even their most dearly held beliefs.

As ever, Philip Pullman is using the language of fantasy to illuminate our world and to explore the deepest questions of what it means to be alive and awake to all the splendors and horrors around us. The extraordinary novels of The Book of Dust speak powerfully to today’s readers and will take their place alongside the forever-favorites of His Dark Materials.

I LOVED the first three books. They are probably my favorite book series. The world that Philip Pullman builds is incredible. The Belle Savage was OK, I found it a little too long and slightly confusing, but I thought The Secret Commonwealth was mostly excellent and was getting this trilogy back on track. Then I read the conclusion.

Without giving too much away, there’s lots of plot points that go nowhere, things that just do not get explained, the ending feels just so incredibly rushed and slightly disconnected, and when the narrator said “the end”, I thought I had accidentally skipped ahead a couple of hours. When I realized that no, this is actually how this entire series concludes, I just sat there in stunned disappointment.

The most frustrating part was how the book kept setting your expectations for something that never happens.

I can’t believe I’m giving the story in this series a 2/5…

A disappointing conclusion to an amazing series

This was really nice and I have bookmarks in several places about the inner and outer worlds. The book gives a lot of perspective on all of the previous stories. The narrator is good—he fixes his first attempt at the Griffin Queen which was very weird on first attempt but it’s better later. He gets very excited but he’s a very good narrator voice for the story. This book and series is one that stands alone for its impact on the individual reader. It is dream like, but not all over the place or hard to follow. It epitomizes that a story is for you and what it brings up in you, not the so-called influencers and self-acclaimed literary geniuses. The story actually illustrates that false dichotomy.

Beautiful series

In a world that worships profitability and efficiency, this book teaches the importance of imagination, of desire, of being wholly and messily human. Lovely!

Loved it all. Wish there was more. Wish Will showed up again. I can't believe it is over.

Great ending to the trilogy

Beautiful story, world, characters and ideas! I hope Pullman will write supplementary stories to tie up all those loose threads we have at the end. Overall a wonderful story.

Captivating!
