Publisher's summary

In this masterful novel, a wealthy young northerner, Anson Dodge, discovers new meaning in his life on St. Simons Island, Georgia, just after the Civil War. A man of remarkable and unforgettable kindness and strength, he shares his heart with two very different women - Ellen, who passionately adores him, and Anna, who comforts him in sorrow. They each surrender themselves to his dreams. Anson Dodge's story unfolds as a beautiful tale of honor when he rebuilds the war-torn Christ Church, Frederica, in memory of happy and lost love.

A wonderful listen!

This book was especially interesting to me as I vacationed on St. Simons Island last week and toured the city and the grounds of Christ Church! Our tour guide talked a lot about the history and the information contained in the book. Because of this, the book came alive for me! Would highly recommend this book!

hope overcomes sorrow

I read this novel over 30 years ago and returned to it following a visit to the Island. Returning to the history of the Island was fun and made me appreciate it even more.

Narration detracts from the story

The inflections used by the narrator are often clumsy and sometimes even change the message intended by the author, I would bet. Instead of enjoying the story, I find myself distracted by the poor narration. I have 175 books in my library and this is the first time I've felt compelled to give a negative review. The narrator isn't doing the author any favors!
