Publisher's Summary

The classic story of paradise found - and lost.

Richard lands in East Asia in search of an earthly utopia. In Thailand he is given a map promising an unknown island, a secluded beach - and a new way of life.

What Richard finds when he gets there is breathtaking: more extraordinary, more frightening than his wildest dreams. But how long can paradise survive here on Earth? And what lengths will Richard go to in order to save it?

Must read before you die

Alex Garland paints the journey of a young man in search of a form of paradise. The main character dances off of the pages and haunts the reader/listener long after travelling with him on his journey. The world Garland creates is authentic to the point that one gets trapped in it for a short while and wonders if Garland isn't merely retelling a personal experience. The element of surrealism and the exploration of the main character's subconscious is as fantastical as it is disturbing. "The Beach" is an investigation of a young man's conscious, self-identified 'want' and the uncomfortable discovery of his subconscious 'need'. Garland's work is captivating to say the least.

Loved the English

All in all an extremely well written book. Didn't care about the characters that much, but I loved the book for the witty language.

The film made me hesitate...

but I needn't have. There's enough variation on the movie to maintain a feeling of discovery and surprise. Plus the narration is first class.

20 years waiting for this audiobook!

Any additional comments?

20 years waiting for this audiobook! I can’t believe it was 20 years ago this came out, it was all the talk of my pals and I one summer when we were all 16. I read the book about 3 times and loved it every time.

The Audio edition is great but only slightly let down by the narrators poor Scottish accent when doing the Daffy Character. I am Scottish and when the accent is butchered I find it irritating. Other than that he did a pretty solid job.

JUST BRILLIANT

Read the book a few years ago and the audio version is even better. The narration is excellent , just how I would imagine Richard [the teller of the story] would speak. All the accents of the various characters are so well done.

Almost better than actually reading the book

Read this book 20 years ago and have seen the film a bunch of times. Think I actually enjoyed the audio book even better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brilliant

Always been one of my top favourites but the narration is fantastic and brought the story to life in a way I’d never appreciated before. If only Danny Boyles interpretation had been as honest to the narrative

Better than the film

I enjoyed the film but the book is so much better. Alfie Allen is a really good narrator (although I didn't much like his Sal).

Surpassed all expectations. Unputdownable.

Ive seen the beach film a few times and always enjoy the fantasy of the storyline so even though i roughly knew what was going to happen it did not make me enjoy this book any less. It is very well written and absolutely surpasses the film. I could not leave it alone and would thoroughly recommend to anyone wanting an easy read to be immersed into a travellers life in Asia.

Exceptional

Exceptional story: dark and full of the menace of humanity. Exceptional narrator: Theon from Game of Thrones has all the ascents and a real flair for telling the story how it should be told! Bloody loved it.

Alfie Allen is Reek from game of thrones

If your wondering if Alfie Allen can pull off a convincing performance, he can. Doesn't disappoint for a moment.
Alex Garland, I'm sure, would be happy.

5 stars.

one of the few books lately that has grabbed and held my attention since I started till I finished. really a lot less like the movie than I was expecting which was welcomed and refreshing. The depth of writing was also far greater than I was expecting. it actually felt like the perfect candidate for a late high school or university literary essay. Narration by Alfie Allen was superb and he nails all the accents except that of Jesses but I still give him credit for trying.

Massively Impressed

Where does The Beach rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book really shocked me. I can't normally reread books or read books that have been made into a film but this was great. It's so different to the book and leaves you reeling at the end.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jed.
I felt like he was quietly the sane, caring character.

What about Alfie Allen’s performance did you like?

I love Alfie's accent and accents. I would listen to more of his books.

Any additional comments?

It was fascinating to listen to such a gradual progression to insanity. I would recommend this to anyone.
Great travelling book too.

A favourite brought to life

I first read The Beach in my late teens and loved it. I then read it on a number of beaches around the world as many did. I was disappointed when the movie came out, as so much had been changed and not for the better in my opinion. It had been more than a decade since I’d read The Beach and I decided to give the audiobook a go. Wow! It really blew me away again. Alfie Allen’s narration is incredible and it allowed me to enjoy the book I knew so well as if for the first time. Exciting, dreamy, disturbing and at times unnerving. I can’t wait to go back to SE Asia. Highly recommend.. This is one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to.

Disappointing

I found this book really hard to proceed with. Boring and the narration lacked believable emotion. Not enough description of the beautiful place the story is set. Quite different from the movie. A bit of a waste of time in my opinion

One of the best narrators I have heard - he has exactly the right voice for the main character and can even do a good Scottish accent - very rare!
