Publisher's Summary

Surging out of the sea, the Bass Rock has for centuries watched over the lives that pass under its shadow on the Scottish mainland. And across the centuries the fates of three women are linked: to this place, to each other.

In the early 1700s, Sarah, accused of being a witch, flees for her life.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Ruth navigates a new house, a new husband and the strange waters of the local community.

Six decades later, the house stands empty. Viv, mourning the death of her father, catalogues Ruth's belongings and discovers her place in the past - and perhaps a way forward.

Each woman's choices are circumscribed, in ways big and small, by the men in their lives. But in sisterhood there is the hope of survival and new life. Intricately crafted and compulsively listenable, The Bass Rock burns bright with anger and love.

Don’t bother

This would be one of the worst books I have listened to. I couldn’t be bothered finishing it.

It had so much promise...

I was so engrossed in this book, I was loving it, and then it just ends! I thought I had accidentally fast forwarded to the end and checked a few times but nope, it just suddenly and without any climax at all, ends. So disappointed. Otherwise, the performance and the characters were great. A little hard to follow who was who at times but the story would have carried it through if not for the end.

Lacked cohesion

At times I thought the story was going to build into something really good with some mystery and suspence but sort of ...fizzled out. For me this book was disappointing. The narrators did a good job though

Not worth tour time.

This is the most confusing disappointing book I’ve read in years. Save your time and money.

Gorgeous story

I loved this tale and the way the three characters through the years were woven together. However, one of the female narrators had a really annoying click in her voice, like she had loose false teeth. It was really distracting.

Nothing happens

Nothing happens. There is no real storyline. I’m not sure what the message is; perhaps domestic violence. It’s too deep for me then as I didn’t get it. the only good thing was the descriptions occasionally. Don’t bother wasting your time nor emotion with this book.
