A real whodunit!

I loved the story, which gave enough clues to keep you guessing plus a taste of the British colonial period through the eyes of Indians.

Fun and interesting

While the writing in some places was a little awkward, the story was fun, and the myriad characters made for an interesting mystery. (Though I had identified the murderer pretty early on, just lacking a motive.) There’s nothing too surprising about the book, things unfold rather as expected for a book of this genre. But it was interesting to read about the rising unrest in the country, as the Indians led by Gandhi sought to oust the British. There were many pointed remarks about the racism, as well as the disparities in the Indian caste system and the plight of women in such a toxic patriarchy. But these were passing moments, just adding some veracity to the story, but not distracting from it. Overall, I enjoyed the book a great deal.

The narrator was quite good, too. Very easy to listen to.

A cosy mystery set in India. I Enjoyed the setting and characters. The author is a very distinguished scientist in a field unrelated to the novel.

One-Dimensional

This book was highly rated by the New York Times. While it was perfectly enjoyable as a light beach read, I found it to be predictable and rather flat. I loved the premise, but the characters were all rather one-dimensional. I correctly guessed the murderer right off the bat.

The history outshines the mystery

Despite charming protagonists and fascinating historical details, the plot is weak. Wonderful narrator, though.
