Amazing!!

Disclosure: This book was generously provided to me by the Author in Audible format in exchange for an honest review. Of which I will try to do my best.

I was assured that this book was a 'clean read' but still romantic with a mystery. This I found very intriguing as you don't find many such books. I love my mysteries but put up with the explicit scenes. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was well written, though much too short for my liking. Usually I'm left wanting more after reading such a short book. But with this new series Linda Weaver managed to pull off the following. The mystery of the missing person that they try to uncover slowing, the slow and gradual growing understanding and appreciation of Amelia and Rick and the growing romance between William and his lady friend. All of which seem to happen simultaneously, as they follow William's diary. You've the MIB bad guys following them and the beautiful Bali island that is described in such a way that you can picture the scenery in your minds eye. I also enjoyed the Bucket list that Rick convinced Amelia on starting. I definitely have added Bali to my Bucket List!!

I can't wait to be able to read more of the Amelia Moore titles, I've noticed that they are available on Kindle but not yet on Audible. I think I'll wait for the Audible versions to come out as I really enjoyed Diane Lehman's narration. She's got a beautiful voice and I'll surely be looking for more titles by her.

slightly romantic cozy mystery

What did you love best about The Bali Mystery?

I loved the relationship between the two detectives Amelia and Rick. I think they work great together and their attraction is strong and written well.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that it was nice and light. There was no major crime scene and didn't make want to stop reading it. In fact, it was so pleasant and fun, I didn't want to stop reading it.

Which character – as performed by Diane Lehman – was your favorite?

Rick was my favorite character. He had so much personality and reminds me of just a grown boy. I love his bucket list, who doesn't have one right?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could definitely listen to this in one sitting if I had the time. It was fast and sweet.

Any additional comments?

I received this free audio in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed it and look forward to other books in this series.

More of a travel romance than a mystery

Amelia Moore is a private investigator and the owner of the Moore Detective Agency. She’s got several cases under her belt. So when Mrs. Brody hires her to find her missing brother (William), she doesn’t bat an eye. As she digs further into the case, she realizes she could really use the assistance of Rick Bonito, who she has hired in the past for certain jobs. Pretty soon, they find out that they need to travel to Bali to pick up William’s trail. Early on, Amelia notices two men following her. She figures once they leave the states for Indonesia, that will be the last of them. Alas, these men follow and Amelia is pretty sure they are hoping she will lead them directly to William. Luckily, Rick knows a few tricks for shaking them and that makes their job much harder. Amelia and Rick also have William’s journal as their secret weapon, giving them clues along the way as to why he left abruptly and what his end goal might be.

This book is more travel romance than mystery. The descriptions of Bali, their natural tourist attractions, and the food all make me want to visit the beautiful island. The budding romance between Amelia and Rick is flirty and cute. Rick decided some time ago he was interested in Amelia and now she has to make up her mind if she’s interested in Rick or not. There’s torch lit dinners, dancing, hikes through forests, swimming with dolphins, etc. It’s like a first couple’s vacation without having had a first date yet. I especially liked the swimming with dolphins bit, though I wish the dolphins were free to come and go as they like instead of being kept for the tourist trade.

With that said, the romance detracted from the mystery. While the romantic elements were well laid out and executed, the mystery elements were not so neat and tidy. Like Rick’s attempts to evade the two mystery men – these men have some training in trailing suspects and Rick’s quick corner turns, etc. seemed like teenager attempts to avoid the local sheriff. Also, later on there is a tracker placed on the vehicle and Rick simply moves it to another vehicle. Ummm… these guys know exactly what Rick and Amelia look like, what they are wearing that day, and what they are driving. So, I would have liked a bit more thought to have gone into these details.

While Amelia has been a PI for some time, for some reason she has never taken any self-defense lessons. Rick offers some quick lessons and these were flirty and involved kisses (which was cute). Yet I had a hard time believing Amelia had over looked this part of being a PI. Several of the little tips Rick shared were common sense and in most regards, Amelia strikes me as a common sense woman. So, I was a little disheartened to see that she needed such basic self-defense training.

Rick has William’s journal. I don’t have the impression that it was a 1000 page tome, yet it takes Rick most of the story to read it. This journal obviously has clues as to why William left and perhaps even where he intended to go, yet our heroes let it languish. I forget how long the flight to Bali is, but I am pretty sure either of them could have finished it in that flight. Normally, I like the ‘clues from a journal’ plot ploy, but for the clues to dribble out like this, I need the journal to be in secret code that needs breaking or something to make it believable.

The pacing was a pretty mellow pace for most of the book. This allowed for the romance to develop and be sweet about it. There is one altercation with the two mysterious men at perhaps the halfway point that gives a little spike of excitement. The ending is where all the action is as we find out the answer to our mystery. I would have liked the action sprinkled throughout the story instead of being bunched up at the end. Also, I think if the romance was broken up by bits of action, I would have enjoyed the romance more.

So while my enjoyment of this book was lukewarm, I would still like to see what happens with Rick & Amelia and the Moore Detective Agency. The two have some heat between them and Amelia surely has more mysteries to solve.

I won a copy of this book from the author via a giveaway on her blog.

The Narration: Diane Lehman had a great voice for Amelia – smart, strong, sometimes flirty. She also had a believable male voice for Rick that I quite liked. Since they are in Bali, Lehman had some accents to do and I believe they were done well (though I haven’t been to Bali so I am no expert on the Balinese accent). My one quibble with her performance is that she often mispronounced Bali. She would say it with a flat A, as you do in the word ‘play’ instead of using a round A as in the word ‘ball’. Later in the story, she sometimes gets the pronunciation right and sometimes wrong. It was a tiny bit distracting.

Cute, Quick Read

Any additional comments?

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3 1/2
This was a cute and quick read (listen, the audiobook was only 4 1/2 hours long so it didn’t take to0 much time). I enjoyed this story. Both Amelia and Rick are fun characters. There were times will listening I had to wonder about Amelia’s detective skills. Thank goodness she had Rick with her to keep her in line and out of trouble. Rick was a hoot and I loved his comic relief on and his bucket list!! I will be picking up the next story in this series. I want to see how Rick and Amelia grow as detectives and I want to see what trouble they may get into next.
Diane Lehman did a really good job narrating this book. I felt like was taking away to Bali. I loved that she actually got to sing a few South Pacific tunes for us both as Amelia and Rick.
If you are a Cosy Mystery reader/listener I believe you will enjoy this story.

Until the next adventure.

Mystery in Bali

The Bali Mystery is Book 1 in the Amelia Moore Detective Series by Linda Weaver Clarke . This story was so interesting and fast paced and I was sad when it ended. Amelia and her partner, Rick, set out for Bali to find Mrs Brody's brother. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones looking for mysterious brother. The performance of the narrator, Diane Lehman, was outstanding. Each character had their own voice and she really brought the story to life. I was surprised at the ending and I think everyone will enjoy this story.

Join these top P. I.s in exotic Bali!

Amelia is hired to find a lady's suspiciously absent brother. When she is followed by two eerie foreign men, she decides the added help of her flirtatious colleague, Rick, is again needed.

All investigation leads them to the Island of Bali. While following leads take them to various places, Rick is able to mark off a few items on his “bucket list “.

The two are in a deadly “ cat and mouse “ game of finding the missing person before the other two foreign men can.

This is a fun, yet suspenseful Mystery/Romance story. The action and adventure is non-stop and totally captivates the reader from the first page to the last.

The characters are defined well and the scenes picturesquely described. The reader/listener will feel as though he/she truly knows the individuals and are in the center of the action.

The Narrator, Diane Lehman, did an outstanding job in her delivery of the story. He “voices” and emphasis were very well done and effective.

Since Ireland is on my "bucket list" I am excited to follow them in their next great adventure to that picturesque and intriguing country, in 'The Shamrock Case'!

This is fantastic. I love the mystery and intrigue of this. Once I started to listen I could not out it down. Its definitely a page turner. Theres lots of twists and turns, its like putting a puzzle together and as you listen you put the puzzle together. This is more than a five star read. I definitely recommend.

A travelogue and Romance - not a mystery

Talks more about touring Bali and the 2 main characters attraction to each other than any mystery. I figured out the "mystery" in the 3rd chapter.

Narrator did decent job considering the material she had to work with.

Excellent book

I really enjoyed this book. I got a trip to Bali along with our stars Amelia and Rick. I loved how Linda Weaver Clarke basically gave a lesson in Bali culture, history, and also a description of many of the landmarks Bali is famous for. And she done all of that gently without over describing or becoming boring at all. I personally do not like books that veer away from the story with overly descriptive parts, this one did not do that at all you got just enough to picture it in your mind and it stayed right on track as well as being part of the story as well. The book has very little strong word sand no F bombs. There is 1 steamy kiss scene but no sex at all in the book. So it would be good for older teens as well as adults.

Diane Lehman has done a great job narrating this audiobook as well. She has done great job with the different characters. She also does a great job relaying the emotion in the book. Her voice s easy to listen to. I felt like she was getting into the book as much as I was. I will be watching for more books narrated by her.

The book itself is about private detective Amelia Moore. She gets a call from a lady looking for her brother William who has gone missing. Amelia calls in her college Rick to help her investigate the case. The case takes them to Bali. The 2 seems to be 2 steps behind William at all times. Every place they go someone has seen William. They are also being followed every where they go. They need to figure out why William has just up and quit his job and put his house up for sale and taken off to Bali without a word to anyway and also find out why they are being followed.

I really liked the characters int his book. Amelia is a bit stiff, she is all business. But Rick gotta love him, yes he can be all business when needed but also knows how to have fun. He turns their investigation into a vacation as well. When not investigating he is playing, taking int h sites and loosening Amelia up.

I cant wait for the next book in this series. I want to travel to Ireland with Amelia and Rick as well as watch their budding romance gain strength.

Sweet, fun mystery!

I listened to this from Audible so my review will be both about the book and about the reader.

This book puts the cozy in "cozy mystery". This was a nice sweet mystery/romance that is light on the mystery but heavy on the cuteness. A very clean, fun, quick read (or listen in my case).

Great character development. I really liked Amelia (love that name!) she was sweet, smart, firm but didn't have a "bad-ass" personality. She seemed nice, like someone I would befriend. I enjoyed getting to know her and look forward to more!
I loved Rick, right away. Now he is a man who knows what he wants (Amelia, LOL) and goes after it, but is not forceful. He is nice, understanding, supportive, and a little romantic. The kind of guy I like.

This book/audio had a lot of references to the movie "South Pacific", which I loved. I have seen the movie. It's not one of my favorites but I do like it and could remember all the references. It was fun.
I also loved their "bucket list". Some of the things on Rick's were Parasailing, Safari, and Trekking through the rain forest. I have never made a bucket list. There are some things that I have been wanting to try - zip lining, for one! I hope to do it this summer. PA has several places you can do it.
Do you have a bucket list? What's on yours?

I have read a couple of Linda's books before (the historical fiction series) so when Linda asked me if I would like to try an audio, I jumped at the chance. I have been wanting to do more audios anyway.

OK so now for the reader - I liked her, but didn't love her. This is pretty typical for me! I very rarely find a reader that meets my expectations. They don't usually sound like I pictured the character to sound like, and this was the case here. But I thought the reader did on OK job, definitely not the worst I've heard.

I have told Linda that I would love to listen to the next in the series so come back for the next audio review of - The Shamrock Case.

Thank you Linda for sending me this audio version of your book for my honest review.
