Live Authentically and Function Effectively in All Areas of Your Life
In this first-of-its-kind book, Sol Smith combines current research, his personal experience as a late-diagnosed autistic adult, and lessons learned as an educator to show how you can transcend common mischaracterizations, overcome shame, and gain the skills to flourish. Sol knows that neurodivergent people often feel that nothing they have been taught relates to how they experience the world. To resolve this conflict, they try to change or mask who they are, which can cause isolation, depression, and anxiety. He advises the opposite: Understand yourself, accept yourself, and reduce conflict. Designed to help you peel away the shell of inadequacy and self-blame that often comes with neurodivergence, The Autistic’s Guide to Self-Discovery offers the necessary tools and knowledge to function effectively at home, at work, and in the wider world.

Reseñas de la Crítica
“This book touches on experiences that I could never put into words, and I cannot imagine how impactful it will be for young people or parents seeking understanding. After falling into autistic burnout myself, I am so grateful this book exists and I get to share it with my clients.”
— Savannah Archer, founder of Sav’s Life Skills (late-diagnosed female adult with autism and ADHD)
“Finally, an expert who truly gets the experience of navigating life as a neurodivergent adult in a neurotypical world! Sol Smith’s shame-busting guide isn’t about fixing who you are — it’s about understanding how your autistic brain works, recognizing and embracing your unique strengths, and discovering tailored tools and strategies to help you thrive authentically and confidently in a neurotypical world.” — Shawn C. Horn, PsyD, clinical psychologist and author of The Adult ADHD Guide to Social Success
“Sol has managed to make the entire book feel like a love letter to the autistic experience. The message is delivered with an overt kindness and gentleness, filled with the exact kind of affirming encouragement most of us need more of in our everyday life.” — Melanie Deziel, Late-Diagnosed Diaries

The clarity and precision in his writing felt like such a breath of fresh air. He has this way of stating things directly—almost rigidly at first—but then circling back with a little space, a little softness, and just enough self-compassion to let it really land. It’s structured and validating without being harsh. That combo is rare.
I especially appreciated Sol’s openness about disordered eating, specifically binge eating. The way he shared his process was so honest and validating. I’m still realizing how common that experience is in the autistic community, and I’m really grateful it’s being talked about more—especially by men. It’s such an important part of the conversation that often gets overlooked.
I also loved his tips for getting your body moving. They weren’t shame-based or prescriptive—they felt gentle, encouraging, and totally grounded in real-life neurodivergent experience. It didn’t feel like a guide trying to “fix” me. It felt like something written by someone who gets it.
I messaged Sol the moment I finished reading. I’m already a third of the way through my second read, and I know this is going to be a book I come back to again and again.
Just like I told him—here’s hoping there’s a second book on the way. We need more voices like his.
New fav. This one will be on repeat in my ear as I live and parent.

At one point the author makes a joke about being so very old. He’s a couple decades younger than me. Makes me cringe when people younger than me act like they have one foot in the grave simply because of their age.
Author advises readers to cut from their lives people who can’t be supportive of them. I don’t like anyone telling me who to keep in my life. Give me some facts, some data, some opinions. I will draw my own conclusions and make my own decision who stays in my life.
Pros:
Spot on in SO MANY ways! I never stopped being amazed that this author knew exactly what it feels like to be me. There were a good amount of examples of being autistic in this book. Some didn’t resonate with me at all. Others could have been written directly from my personal experience.
I loved the focus on older autistic people. That’s what I need to hear about and this book met that need.
Author did an excellent job reading. Good pacing. Nice amount of expression.
I got many ideas of actual things I can do to make my life less stressful. Small actions I can make to ease things for myself. I was uplifted by this.
I loved that the author made clear that examples were drawn from real people and scrambled enough so that nobody could be identified. I liked that people’s privacy was protected.
Author gave me the best reasoning behind why to meditate and journal that I have heard. So many people say ‘journal and meditate’. I find both these actions very annoying. But after listening to the section of this book about them, I have a clearer understanding of what’s in it for me to do these things. I appreciate that.
This book was very good. I expect I may listen to it all over again at some point on the future and see how my reaction to it changes as I get more used to living unmasked. After I unmask. Which I’m less anxious and more excited about since listening to this book. Thanks, Author!
Great Book for the Older Autistic Person
