The ultimate autistic survival guide to therapy

"This is the book that would've saved me nine different therapists, decades of self-analysis, thousands of pounds, twelve different doctors and untold amounts of pain, frustration and trauma - in spending a lifetime looking for the right answers in the wrong places I've become an accidental expert."

In this candid, witty and insightful exploration into therapy, Steph Jones uses her professional and lived experiences as a late diagnosed autistic woman and therapist, as well as consulting therapists from across the world and tapping into the autistic community, to create the ultimate autistic survival guide to therapy.

Steph confronts the statistics, inadequate practices and ableist therapists head on and poses the questions of how we can make therapy neurodivergence-affirming and how to create safe spaces for autistic individuals. With strategic and practical advice to help recognise the 'red flags' of a dodgy therapist and provide a clear roadmap to finding your confidence and setting the appropriate boundaries with a new therapist, Steph has every question answered.

To support therapists striving for inclusivity and a neurodiverse affirming practice, the inclusion of a context guide provides a deconstruction of each therapy session so you can recognise how undiagnosed (or diagnosed) autism may present itself during therapy and how you can start to explore this in the therapeutic space.

This book was full of information that helped me get to know my newly diagnosed self much better, and also how to navigate therapy in a more functional way. I could start this again right away and be as interested as the first time.

I know myself better

This book had me in tears so many times. I found it immensely relatable and helpful. While it answered some great questions it has left me with more, but good, questions. I am so thankful for this book and highly recommend it.

I couldn't put it down

For anyone trying to figure out if you’re autistic, or for anyone diagnosed (especially late-diagnosed) with autism - this book is incredibly important.
Myself, I’ve gotten to a point in therapy where I keep interviewing therapists and finding out that they can’t meet me where I’m at. So it was good to helpful information from an autist who is a therapist. Invaluable to me.

A necessity

I recommend this book to anyone who has not felt seen or understood by healthcare professionals.

Validation for why therapy did not work for me.

Not sure what the other review was talking about. It almost made me pass on this book and I'm glad i didnt. This was one of the most nuanced descriptions of Autistic tendencies and I feel like it gets overshadowed by more popular books on the market. I loved the narration. Loved the scientific, yet tangible and humorous way the info was ptesented.

Underrated Book

Extremely vindicating of my experience as one who is on "the spectrum". This book came at just the right time in my life.

I am currently on my own journey of late diagnosed ASD. and it has been rough but knowing I am not alone and that I'm doing the right things has helped so much. I have learned a lot of new techniques too! Thanks Steph! you are very appreciated! 💝

I feel heard!

I cannot recommend this book enough! Should be required reading for: ALL therapists; anyone who considers themselves possibly neurodiverse; and anyone who has ever had negative, confusing, or demoralizing experiences with therapy. After listening to this (humorous, insightful, down-to-earth, and entertaining) book, you will see the world so much more clearly! And feel so much more empowered to find the right supports, and advocate for yourself and your needs, in - and out - of the therapy room.

You will never see therapy (or yourself) the same!

this book is incredible and easily digestible. I love that she sites her sources and included interviews from some of my favorite Autistic YouTubers. Every autistic person and therapist could benefit from reading this book.

life changing
