Publisher's Summary

Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today best-selling author of The Hollow of Fear.

As "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective," Charlotte Holmes has solved murders and found missing individuals. But she has never stolen a priceless artwork - or rather, made away with the secrets hidden behind a much-coveted canvas.

But Mrs. Watson is desperate to help her old friend recover those secrets and Charlotte finds herself involved in a fever-paced scheme to infiltrate a glamorous Yuletide ball where the painting is one handshake away from being sold and the secrets a bare breath from exposure.

Her dear friend Lord Ingram, her sister Livia, Livia's admirer Stephen Marbleton - everyone pitches in to help and everyone has a grand time. But nothing about this adventure is what it seems and disaster is biding time on the grounds of a glittering French chateau, waiting only for Charlotte to make a single mistake...

Critic Reviews

“These books, which recast Sherlock Holmes as Charlotte Holmes, are perfect for those who adore layered stories. Unignorable questions of gender, expectation and privilege lurk beneath complex mysteries and a slowly scorching romance.” (The Washington Post)

“Fast-paced storytelling and witty prose add further appeal for those who like their historical mysteries playful." (Publishers Weekly)

“Thoughtful yet brief remarks critique patriarchy, heteronormativity, and colonialism, fitting organically into an absorbing whodunwhat arc. An exciting addition to the mystery series; Holmes meets Oceans 11 meets A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Brava Sherry! Brava Kate!

Sherry Thomas continues her incredibly clever Lady Sherlock series with what Hollywood would call a caper, and off we go to France. This book was a bit more light-hearted than the earlier ones; the mystery was intricate but not life-threatening, and the danger did not seem so close. As a result, we get to know and understand more about Charlotte and her sister Lucia, Lord Ashburton, and the always surprising Mrs. Watson.

This series has been delightful, and the pleasure is enhanced by Kate Reading’s excellent narration. Start with the first installment and enjoy.

Twists and turns

Just when you think you know where this story is heading, it takes you around a blind curve. All of the previous main characters are involved in this caper. Some old enemies return. We find out why Charlotte dresses as she does. Lots of tension with feelings. Excellent narration, as always.

Overwhelming Sense of Ennui

Loved the first 3 novels. Kept falling asleep while listening to this one. Very disappointing, but glad I persevered to hear the last five minutes.

Not quite up to standards, but okay.

I like the series, but this book seemed to lag. There was too much chatting and worrying and not nearly enough Holmes type deduction. Charlotte was almost a minor character. I did listen to all of it, but it is not my favorite of the series.

A little disappointing

The mystery is great, and the inclusion and introduction of additional characters enjoyable. The narration, as always, was flawless, an almost saliva inducing treat of elocution and delivery. What didn't I like? Two things--first, the romance is rather salaciously amped up, and second, the character development of Mrs Watson, whose revealed history forms the impetus for the story, seemed unnecessarily disconnected from the story line. The author decided to make her bisexual, as though that would deepen her or make her more complicated. I disagreed since it added nothing to the plot or development of the story but seemed to only serve the purpose of... what? Diversity? Celebrating a "strong" woman making bold decisions in an age of gender roles and discrimination? Oh well. I guess even as good a writer as Ms Thomas can be allowed a misstep or two. I hope the next installment tones these aspects down.

The best Charlotte yet!

Let's start with a big hand for the narration! Lots of characters and they all have clear voices and personalities.

I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say:

We get more Livia (YAY!!) and background on Watson. There is increased interaction between the characters, which I really enjoyed. Many relationships get closer and we get a greater depth of understanding.

Heist plot. And a doozy at that.

Some very interesting plot twists throughout. Favourite of the series so far!
