Half a millennium ago, in a desperate attempt to defeat the Ithonian Empire, Kanderon Crux and her allies banished the city of Imperial Ithos from Anastis. Her dread weapon, the Exile Splinter, even erased the memory of its location from the universe. Now it's returning and bringing the Exile Splinter back with it. The great powers of the continent are desperately hunting for the lost city, knowledge lost even to Kanderon herself. None know what ancient Ithonian weapons and enchantments might still be found in the ruins, but the Exile Splinter alone would be a prize to justify war.

Publisher's Summary
A special middle grade debut of magic and courage in a world of witches, written with the charm and enchantment of books like Circus Mirandus and The Apothecary.
Will Arianwyn ever become a real witch?
Arianwyn has flunked her witch's assessment. She knows she's doomed. Declared an apprentice and sent to the town of Lull in disgrace, Arianwyn may never become a real witch like everyone else - much to the glee of her archrival, Gimma.
But the remote Lull is not as boring as it seems. Strange things are being sighted in the woods, and a dangerous infestation of hex creeps throughout the town. Then the worst thing Arianwyn can imagine arrives in Lull: Gimma turns up on vacation determined to make her life miserable.
Despite being a little over her head, Arianwyn starts to get the hang of being a witch, even if she's only an apprentice. But there's one thing she's wrong about: The worst is still to come. For a mysterious darkness has begun to haunt her spells, and there may be much more at stake than just her pride....

Enchanting Read
If you could sum up The Apprentice Witch in three words, what would they be?
Enchanting, Bewitching, Heartfelt
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Definitely a hard to put down book. I must say the narrator is stupendous. Best reading I have ever heard. You couldn't have picked a better narrator. Kudos to Elizabeth Knowelden.
Any additional comments?
I absolutely loved this book and didn't want it to end. Thank heavens I read the author is working on a book 2. James Nicol's world was totally enchanting and drew me in. Fantastic writing. Although labelled as a middle grade book, its appeal certainly transcends to a wider audience. In fact I liked this book so much I purchased the book from Audible as well and I must say the narrator they picked to read it was absolutely stupendous. They couldn't have made a better choice. I played the Audible book while I followed along on my ebook. Great character development and a fantastic tale. I highly recommend this book. Definitely will be reading book 2 when it is available.
