"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" is the 8th of 12 stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. It was originally published in Strand Magazine in 1892. Doyle thought that this was his best Holmes story. In fact, he thought so much of it that he wrote and produced a play based on the story. The Scottish writer believed this to be his finest detective Holmes story. Heiress Helen Stoner engages Sherlock to investigate her twin sister’s strange and untimely death; she believes gypsies are responsible. The siblings have been living with their stepfather, Dr. Roylott, who once beat a servant to death while in India. Through the powers of deduction, the brilliant detective saves Helen’s life, while untangling the mystery.

A fun quick listen, I love Holmes I this story. He's so quickly willing to help this woman whom he's never met; he stands up to the bullying of a strong and intelligent bad guy; and he is willing to risk his own life in the pursuit of truth and justice! My hero!
The performance are meh, but the story is good enough that you quickly get over the feeling that they are sitting around reading the text.
