Publisher's summary

The New York Times best-selling author of Buddha and Jesus weaves together historical narrative, mystery, exciting adventure, and intrigue in this masterfully told novel that reveals surprising discoveries about the unknown last disciple of Christ and a new understanding of who Jesus was in his final days.

When a solid-gold reliquary missing from a church in Belgium suddenly resurfaces in America, a young newspaperman begins to investigate the story. At first it seems like just another case of a treasure stolen during World War II that has resurfaced. But it soon becomes apparent that much more is at stake.

Hidden within the medieval reliquary is a gold box that holds a sacred relic - a single finger bone - from an anonymous saint. Why would the remains of someone unknown to the Church be considered holy? The search for answers leads to a shocking discovery - a dangerous secret known only to a small band of people. If one touches the reliquary, a sacred vision is received - a vision involving a young girl who had a chance encounter with Jesus just before he was crucified.

The few people who have been blessed with these miraculous messages have banded together into a mysterious school, a closed society that preserves this venerated wisdom. But their knowledge of the young girl and Jesus is at once so fascinating and so highly controversial that it cannot be shared with the world.

This young girl, curious about the charismatic man named Jesus, embarks on a quest to find out who he really was. What she finds - the knowledge the society protects - is at times far different from the accepted Gospels. Could this unknown girl be the 13th Disciple - the last and truest apostle of Christ?

Nice

This was a nice book that I enjoyed a lot. It is definitely not a book for everyone, but if you like books that involve a lot of spirituality and you aren't opposed to take a leap of faith then you'll enjoy this immensely. I like that it was entertaining throughout and offered some spiritual insight at the end.

Powerfully insightful and rich spiritual drama

If you could sum up The 13th Disciple in three words, what would they be?

A brilliant novel . A psycho spiritual revelation of contemporary insights into ancient truths
and deeply meaningful wisdom

What other book might you compare The 13th Disciple to and why?

Dan Brown's " Da Vinci Code"

Which scene was your favorite?

The entire book is a seamless whole not to be analyzed as fragments.
The last chapters are powerful revelations of meaning.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The latter chapters and their synthesis of deeper meanings.

Any additional comments?

The profound realizations that spirituality is an inherent quality of the soul.
Deepak uses a much broader and rich palette of colorful dynamics in this novel style.
As compared to his other books this book is a tapestry of color and emotion and depth
quite unique , Deepak's "always present" insight into psycho-spiritual development shines in this opus.

Read this book ..your soul will be nourished
if you are a skeptic you might find that the heart is infinitely more wise than the doubting analyzing intellect.

True "gold" is a matter of values and true wisdom is always deeply meaningful regardless of the form it manifests in.

Very Interesting

I really enjoyed the story, although I will probably actually listen to it again. Once I listened to the afterword, it made it easier to understand what was going on in the story, what I was supposed to grasp. Thus a second listen will enable me to see what I did not in the first go round.

Expand your spiritual horizons.

What made the experience of listening to The 13th Disciple the most enjoyable?

This was a whole new expression of the old story. Very refreshing in its concept and depth.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Deepak Chopra?

I do not like the halting style of narration that Deepak Chopra uses. I would not listen to another book narrated by him.

Horrible narration

If I could give this a negative star I would. I could not listen to finish the book it was so horrible. I ended up borrowing from library and reading it. The story wasn't terrible. Clearly English wasn't first language of narrator. You couldn't tell if a person was talking it was complete monotone and run on sentences.

An interesting story line for explaining a journey to a deeper spiritual connection.

The story line of the characters in this book is a fictional story intended to represent a parallel to growing to s deeper connection with a higher power.

In the last chapter the author explains this journey from his own experience. Even though I do not agree with all of his statements, they all offer an interesting perspective and are worth contemplating.

The author has done himself s great disservice by deciding to be the reader for the audio performance. His diction and ascent were difficult to understand. In addition, the almost monotone reading of the story in what would have been very emotional events for the characters also had a deleterious effect on the performance.

Sorry to be so harsh on the performance. It took my overall rating from a 4 or 5 to a 3. The writing and storyline were very well done. The honest feedback is given in the hope that the author does not make this mistake again. If the funds are not available to hire a professional reader an option that comes to mind is to consider a intern from the drama or communication department of a local college.

I would consider a audiobook from this author in the future, unless he performs it himself.

Chopra is a terrible narrator

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is better read then heard- this is the first time I have experienced this issue

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Get a reader that can tell a story-

How could the performance have been better?

He read it like a high school kid in English class
