Plot Convenience > Plausibility

I felt the overall story was quite engaging, if not confusing at times. The structure seemed a bit odd where the fist half of the book the Alliance dominated the Jung and the second half of the book tried to make up for that imbalance. Some spaceship chase sequences were particularly implausible where two experienced pilots get put to shame by a newbie soldier recruit.

Jessica is still being possessed by some sort of madness. The only plausible way the to explain her continued uncharacteristic behavior is perhaps to come up with a rationalization that she might be an abuser of stims or some other performance enhancing drugs which could explain why she's acting so strangely the last couple of books.

Personally I was looking toward a cathartic ending but there's a cliffhanger instead.

Overall however, I felt too many story arks were in this book were filler and that detracted from the overall scheme of things.

The saga continues!

Hard for me to be objective being so invested in this universe. All I can say is that I can't wait for more. The relationships between Nathan, Vlad, and Jess are great in this book.

I guess my only complaint is that, well, we're now 15 books into this series. Nathan has matured, Vlad has matured, many other characters have grown into well rounded characters. Jessica has not changed at all, she still acts like a child despite her elite training and all they've gone through. it's a little annoying and unbelievable in this universe. How am I supposed to buy that Jess would break rank to Tellis, whine like a child and lose her temper when given direct orders after EVERYTHING that's happened up to this point. Hopefully next book she will be more rounded like the other main characters.

Narrator

The story was sometimes hard to follow. Narration of the story sounded like the narrator was READ ING a script most of the time. Not saying the narrator was a terrible narrator, just that perhaps this type of story didn't match the narrator's natural demeanor.

What a fantastic ride, one hell of a good book.

Excellent book full of high and lows, culmination of a great series of episodes. The writer is very good the narration spot on. Each and every "episode's keeps drawing me back again and again.

Tears at the end

Three times through the series did the action bring tears. Vlad saluting for Nathan just caused the flow to begin

Ryk Brown has matured as a writer--best yet

From the first book in the series, I was hooked. Besides the great story lines, Brown has deftly matured his characters through the crucible of war, battle, and survival. Some mature faster than others, but all are growing in depth. This latest installment keeps the characterization on the same track. I would have never imagined at the beginning of the series that Nathan Scott would mature into a thoughtful, careful leader who, at the end, makes the tough calls. This is worth every minute of time. I also compliment Jeffrrey Kater. I did not care for his reading in the beginning. However, he too, has matured in his craft and listeningf to him is enjoyable.Thumbs up to the team for this one. Bring on the next.

Gripping

It is sad to see this series come to an end. I must say the ending is less than satisfying. Maybe that means there is going to be a spin off series.

Captain Scott wants to attack the Jung and destroy their ability to attack Earth again. Admiral Galiardi is against expanding the war beyond the Sol system. Captain Scott and the Alliance are again thinking outside of the box for a solution. I found that I had to pay attention during battle scenes as Brown had the Arora jumping, but coming out of the jump he would switch to a fighter or the Celestia. The author kept this style up throughout the book as a way to move quickly between various components of the fight. The Jung battleship, the Alliance, acquired in the prior book and rebuilt to include a jump drive goes into battle action in this story. The ending was most unexpected.

I enjoyed the gunship factory and the Princess’s engineering feats. I also enjoyed, for the last time, the superb space battles and all the various characters that are like old friends to me. When will I again hear “The jump flash passed over the bridge”. I do hope Brown will continue this series in a spin-off of some type.

It is about fourteen and half hours long. Jeffrey Kafer did an excellent job narrating the series.

Great book

Wow! I didn’t expect that. I thought of a million other endings to the first part of this but definitely not that. It is a great book I am still digesting the whole thing though. All I have is wow!
