Publisher's Summary

Master Sergeant Gant Maker was a highly decorated and well-respected marine - until his last mission left him as the sole survivor of an encounter with a vicious race called the Vacra. Served up as a scapegoat and drummed out of the military, he has since lived a life of seclusion with only an adopted alien as a companion.

Now the Vacra have returned. As the only person to have ever faced them and survived, Maker is reinstated in the corps and given the onerous task of finding this enemy on a world located at the edge of known space. Assisting him is an unlikely band of military rejects, including a blind sharpshooter, an unstable psychic, and a genetically engineered killing machine who refuses to fight.

Given that the Vacra have superior weapons and technology, Maker recognizes that his team is at a distinct disadvantage. But marines are nothing if not resourceful, and Maker has an audacious plan that just may level the playing field - if it doesn't get them all killed.

Hard core military science fiction

Would you listen to Terminus again? Why?

If you like fast paced, hard core military science fiction then you will like this book and as a bonus the lead character has an out of this world pet.
It is a good listen, did not want to turn it off when work ended. Narrator does a great job conveying emotions of the characters

On the fringe of being great

I enjoy a good space opera from time to time, even if I do hate that terminology, and look for it periodically. hardman is one of my favorite authors, and it has another favorite narrator, so I made time for this book. I must say that I don't recount what happens in a book. If you want that, read the blurb, it's what it's for after all, but for the sake of understanding here is a brief recap. A hardcase SOB space Marine and his squad encounter an alien threat. Everytbody, but him gets killed, and he is blamed for the deaths (at least they suspect that he did it, don't want to give anything away), then on an outer planet sometime later these same aliens show up and start whacking the locals. He gets called back in to go fight the bugs.

Now, if it were me, and I got slammed for telling the truth, no one believed me, and I suffered for it I sure as hell wouldn't be going back to help anyone fight the menace I shouted about so long ago. No matter my fate I'd stay put and let the higher ups try to deal with it, bu that makes a for a dull story, and no one wants to read about a hardcase marine sitting atound and baking muffins or whatever, so he (unlike me) agrees to go back and start kicking butt. Master Sergeant Gant Maker then proceeeds to tackle the enemy head on.

The story is action packed, as anyone who knows Hardman's style would expect, and it is full of epic battles and one on one cobat scenes that will take you to your knees. The aliens are legit tough as balls, and it doesn't look good for the home team. Still, Maker isn't a pansy and he takes the fight to them.

I must say, that the cover of this book is really fantastic. The art is beautiful and realistic, but more importantly it lets you see just what to expect in the book. There are no surprises and you know exactly what's coming in the way of action.

The one thing that really drove me crazy is that for as battle-hardened as Maker is, he allows himself to get sidewiped a lot. He rarely seems to know what is happening around him, and that raises the bar on my suspension of disbelief. Seriously, how do you live to fight for so long if you get blindsided everytime you go to war? That is a big nitpick for me, and I will take off a star. The rest of it, though, is pure gold. You will really love the battles and the tension. This is book one in a series, so look for more to come later.

Naramore is the perfect partner for Hardman, as their styles compliment one another quite well. I have listened to numerous novels read by Naramore, and he is never more in his element than when he is reading something by Hardman. He brings Maker to life, and you could see a young R. Lee Emory playing the guy. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

If this review helped, please press the YES below. Thank you immensely!!!

Very Good Space Opera

I really enjoyed Hardman's Kid Sensation Series, and I expected this to be a similar middle grade book. I was surprised that this was a very different style of book. This is not a book targeted to kids. That said there is minimal material that would be inappropriate for younger listeners. I liked that we could have adult targeted book without the excessive swearing, sex, and "grittiness" that is so prevalent today because many authors seem to think it is necessary to make a book "believable".

This is a very good Sci-fi story. Great characters, both human and alien. Duplicity, adventure, corruption, and well written battle scenes. Characters each have their own motivations that are not always clear at first glance. I think that this really sets up this new series, and I look forward to future Fringe World books. That said, the plot in this story is nicely wrapped up by the end and if this is the only book in the series that you read it is still worth it.

Naramore does a great job at narrating this book, with distinct character voices that helps bring the story to life. I want to thank Kevin Hardman for providing me with this review copy of Terminus.

Not usually my genre, but found this really riveting. This was a good storyline, and the Vacra need to be on the lookout!

Great read, looks to be a good series.

Terminus: Fringe Worlds #1, my tenth read/listen from author Kevin Hardman & the first book in a series that looks to be excellent! I don't restrict my reading to any particular genre. Instead, I'm a sucker for anything with memorable characters & a story that keeps me on the edge of my seat until the end. Reminiscent of Michael Anderle & Sarah Noffke’s Ghost Squadron series and Isaac Hooke’s Forever Gate series. Narrator Mikael Naramore’s talented narration added greatly to the book’s enjoyment. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Since I own both the Kindle & Audible edition I was able to follow along while being read to. I have to admit there were times I sped up the book because I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Different than his Kid Sensation series I’ll be reading more from this author & look forward to the rest of the series! (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

A must have

I wasn't fully on board in the beginning in the book but it turned out amazingly well. The narration was great, I got a little bit of the Outlaw Galaxy vibe due to the narrator being the same. It also remind me a little bit of the First Colony series. And love the tip of the hat to Ender's Game.

A great space adventure

I received this one for reviews of my own will and gladly review it.

the first time I read what was this about I knew I had to read/hear it, and it didn't disappointed.

terminus has a lot of good things, like our very unique heroes and the very special situations they end up in.

I was amazed and have a fun time with Arrogant Maker and his team, Arlan was pretty interesting addition.

hope I can go back to this world soon.

Out of this world

Wow, just wow. This is a brilliant book, I enjoyed it so much. If all books in this genre are like this then I might have to change from mystery to contemporary sci-fi books as it grabs you from the start and doesn't let up.
A soldier discredited from the marines after a mission went horribly wrong is called back into service when a vicious race called the Vacra return to reek havoc on a fringe world. Master Sergeant Gant Maker being the only person to have survived an encounter with them puts together a rag tag team of marines to fight them. Each flawed or damaged in some way and usually pasted over by commanding officers his team must use there own personal skills to band together to survive.
With so much action, adventure, twists, turns, quirky but loveable characters it has something for every one. It is a story I will happily listen to again and I can't wait for book two.
The narrator was exceptional and I love his wide use of voices for the different characters, making it a pleasure to listen too. I hope he sticks with the series and reads the next book.

An Excellent Start

A duty hardened Sargent abandoned by those who he trusted and served ,along with an unusual alien companion are tasked with a mission which may be the redemption he is looking for. Along with the usual skilled misfits his job is to track down a unusual alien species which may be a grave threat to humanity.
The story is quite slow to start and mainly involves lots of background and scene setting but when it comes in soon makes up for it.
The story its self has some nice twists and is of a good length to get your teeth into, narration itself is as always excellent by mikael and helps character and story flow nicely.
At the end i did find myself ready to jump into the next story which is always a great sign of a job well done.
This audio was given to me in exchange for an honest review and as such is my own opinion.

I want book two.

“I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”
I said yes to reviewing this because I can never get enough really good, military style, Science Fiction stories, and I had never read anything by this author,so thought it worth trying. I am so glad I did, it was a wonderful story and I hated having to pause it to let the dog out for her business. I really liked the realistic feel to the military aspects and the aliens were all well thought out. In fact after Maker my favourite Character was his alien sidekick.
I am definitely adding Kevin Hardman to my future autobuys. And as for the narrator, I'm off to see what else he's done as I truly love his style and all the distinctive Character voices he does.
I truly hope that there is a book two coming out in audio soon as I would love to revisit with all the Characters and enjoy their adventures.

A brilliant narrator and story!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked everything about this story. I love Sci fi so I thought I'll give the book a go since I have not read/listened to anything by this author. I am so glad that I did! I was hooked from the beginning.

It was slow to begin with, as there was no action, however this did not put me off. Actually the revise happened, I wanted to hear what was going to happen next.

There were twists in the book that I was not expecting. Yes there were one or two holes in the story however this did not put me off.

My favorite character has to be sergeant maker. I found him to be funny at times, loyal, courageous and intelligent.

Would recommend this book to those who love scifi with action/adventure.

What does Mikael Naramore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrator is one of the best that I have listened to. He suited this book really well. He bought out the characters, I felt I was listening to different people. I couldn't stop listening to this story. I felt it went quite quickly. I shall be listening to this narrator in the future.

Worth a Listen. Is there a sequel?

Story and Plot
Kevin Hardman does a good job the story is well written, well paced, the characters reactions are believable and the events are interesting. Never was I waiting for the book to get on with it or unclear about what was going on.

The story moved on and as things happen we find out more about what is going on. Even the things that are surprising feel like they fit and were true before we find out about them and not just pulled from a hat.

With out spoiling anything this could be the start of an epic series of books. it does a great job introducing the basics of the setting, the events, characters and foes. It feels like it would make a great pilot for an TV show or film.

Cast
An main group is an interesting cast with mixed backgrounds, personalities. This group of characters have potential I would like to have more opportunities to see them interacting. if you like Science Fiction books about a small military team of misfits and odd balls you should be more than happy with them.

Narration
As with all good narrators Mikael Naramore portrays the characters with distinct voices lending them emotion and motivation enhancing the story beyond the mere written words. I would be happy to listen to more books with the same narrator.

Summery
Worth giving a go. I am more than happy with the hours I spent listing to this book and if there was a sequel out right now I would be listening to in now instead of writing this.

Want to find out more about the alien, Erlen

As the sole survivor of his last mission, Gant Maker is mistrusted and disbelieved. He's forced out of the military until many years later when something comes to light, seemingly corroborating his story. Now he is reinstated and given a new mission, one which he is extremely keen to take on.
Maker is an intriguing character, there's a lot you don't know about him, even throughout the book I really want to find out more about the alien 'pet' Erlen too. There was a bit too much unnecessary detail which held the story back sometimes but overall quite a good pace.
Good narrator but the reading was too slow for me, I had to use a faster speed.

Struggling

Well, being as kind as I can be, I found this a pretty ridiculous story, especially when lives are being save; people rescued, but don’t let that get in the way of a court marshall for doing it! And, it gives a whole new meaning to love thy neighbour.

No, I doubt I will want to follow this; too ridiculous for words.

A great outer space adventure.

Recruited to find an insectiode alien species, that had wiped out his last mission, Sergeant Maker assembled a mottled crew of misfits and went in pursuit of his quarry.
As with a lot of bureaucratic institutions, the original plan told to the officers concerned, were not the end game. To say things went a little askew is an understatement.
However, I loved the characters of this book, especially Maker and his misfits. It was a well thought out plot and storyline.
It has enough twists to make it good drama.
I listened to the audiobook for this episode, and found that the narrator enhancement of the story by voice characteristics added to the overall enjoyment of story.
