Jim Hawkins has a bad attitude. What's more, he enjoys having a bad attitude about everything—especially about church.

Garth Plimpton is a fanatic. He's spent so much time studying the scriptures and thick books on archaeology that that he can't carry on a normal conversation with other kids. That's why they consider him a nerd.

Through an unusual chain of events, these two opposites become fast friends. It all began when Garth told Jim a simple truth: "They really existed once, you know."

"Who?" Jim asked.

"Nephites," Garth replied. "Every character in the Book of Mormon ate, slept, died, was buried . . ."

That statement, taken for granted before, would soon echo deeply in the two boys' minds—because they were on the trail of a chilling secret.

nothing to dislike here, do yourself a favor and enjoy this book. I share this book often.

A great story that brings Book of Mormon characters alive.

I grew up reading these books or having them read to me. I recently (2 years ago) read through the whole series, I’ve always enjoyed this story so please do the audio for the other books because I would definitely buy them

Please do the rest of the books.

The story is fun and engaging. The narrator/author is a true story teller. It is so fun and has left me in giggles several times. I am in my 70's but he has captured my childhood perfectly. Great choice for a warm summer afternoon.

True story telling gold

I’ve been hoping for years this series would come on Audible. I absolutely love this series!! I can’t wait for the rest of the books to be released.

The author does a wonderful job narrating, and draws you into each intense moment. The author also does a wonderful job with conveying spiritual moments, and teaching the listener about spiritual truths. This book is exactly what I needed to help refreshen and reawaken my love for the Book of Mormon stories I cherished as a child.

Listened to this as a youth on cassette tape on long drives. Relive the moment again with my kids. Special memories.

Loved it!

I really liked these audiobooks when I was a teenager; they've really made road trips more fun. A lot of Latter-day saint fiction tends to be corny, but the Tennis Shoes books manage to mostly rise above that corniness. These books are well-researched, a necessity when you have time travel stories that go to ancient Mesoamerica. The story of 20th century kids landing in that time period is also cleverly woven into what is known as "the war chapters" of the Book of Mormon, which is no small feat. There's fighting and marching, with daring rescues and political intrigue, but above all this book is a faith-promoting story for LDS youth.

The previous version of this audiobook was abridged, and while some of the "new" details are appreciated, I felt like some of the other changes the author made felt like he was nitpicking. That said, the changes haven't hurt the story, so maybe I'm guilty of nitpicking too. In any case, the new narration is entertaining and Chris Heimerdinger's writing paints a vivid picture in the mind.

If action-adventures with a smattering of Christianity is your cup of cocoa, I say give this book a try.

Adventure!

I have read and listened to this series for years. It didn't aged poorly as some books do. This book didn't need a do over. It no longer has a sharp crisp pace and has become wordy when it didn't need to be. I was so excited to see this released to Audible but I think it will be a pass for me on future books. I will stick to my CD's and books.
If this is your first exposure to this book, The story is a fun adventure that invites questions and the entire series is worth reading. I wish the author had put his focus into finishing that series instead. This is not the only book that the author has revised. Sometimes you just need to walk away and let it be.

Updated but not improved.

This book…the series actually, was a big part of my childhood. Road trips always had Chris Heimerdinger books playing to pass the time. I can only hope the rest of his books become available on Audible.

A fun story for LDS families
