Harold is an old school clowner. Big in the day, they were. Standing on the sides of roads, scaring the normal folk. But it just doesn't work anymore ... not these days. It's all been watered down, and nobody is scared anymore.

But Harold wants to bring back the fear.

At least, that's what Howdy the Magnificent — the clown that has been resident in Harold's head since his school days, and one particular day where he had a silly little accident balancing on the back feet of his chair — says.

But when things go wrong in the park in the middle of the night, Howdy and Harold decide to really ... bring back the fear ... in a life changing rampage of gore soaked vengeance.

Consider this a trigger warning for everything.

A dark unconventional frenemy buddy horror about a man and his imaginary clown. It is less of a plan and more a grim inquiry into the people around us by way of psychotic induced jokester. The tone is dark without obvious tendencies at humor one might expect rather it is more grimly ironic with a more subtle than expected existential delusion. I appreciated the tone and restraint here, it gets gorey but in a methodical thoughtful way that never really feels too schlocky. The narration by Big Bear Audio is good and really helps the material. Tatters is not a long book and doesn't overstay, there were times it might have been more complex or metaphorical since the topic has a little depth in a sly way. I enjoyed it.

Enormous props to Big Bear Audio for bringing the story, characters, and demented behaviors to life with vivid detail through exquisite narration and tone. Gripping from the first paragraph, this tale of a young man tormented by his alter ego to pursue numerous acts of violence and depravity is a perfect balance of angst and gore, violence and disgust, persuasion and rejection. Tension continuously builds, the risks increase, and the outcome is uncertain until the end. I was offered several warnings about its splatterpunk content, but find it sits firmly in middle of an R-rating with fewer triggers than many other tales I've encountered. A delightfully written portrayal of the id run amok. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 1.85x.]

If you are into creepy mentally-ill killer clowns then give it a shot.
It’s a quick one and the narrator helps make it an easy listen.
