Loved the audiobook!

Revisiting Tarzan novels that were a part of my life from my preteen years, mmmm, 59+ years ago.
Have listened to 5 in a row now and can’t wait to start the 6th!

Another Great Performance and Production

I am so happy to see that Ben Dooley and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. are continuing to produce new, first-rate recordings of the Tarzan titles. I hope they are selling well so that it is worth it to everyone to keep putting out more ERB titles.

I recently discovered the Ben Dooley performances. I have listened to a number of different readings of the ERB titles over the years. For me, Ben Dooley’s performances and recordings are the best of the best.

ERB is a fascinating throwback to the age of pulp fiction. He was one of the stars of that literature. And, he was a product of his time. This is part of his glamour. A reader who reads everything he wrote will see a man working hard at his craft and producing title after title with varying degrees of success. You have to look at them yourself because you might love a title that is roundly dismissed. The books do different things and so they will appeal to different kinds of readers. It is a mistake to have a single set of expectations for all of the Tarzan books. For example, Tarzan and the Leopard Men is more realistic and based on historical and journalistic research the author did on preparation of its composition. This is quite different from the more fantastic tales he often wrote. A constant in all of ERB’s work is that he had high standards for his works. They may be uneven in success but they are always well constructed, thoughtful, and entertaining. There will usually be things to appreciate and enjoy about a work even if it doesn’t turn out to be one of your favorites.

My advice is to give the Ben Dooley recordings a try. I highly, highly, recommend his performances of books I have loved for 45 to 50 years. These recordings add to my experience of the stories.

Well performed!

I’ve always loved Edgar Rice Burroughs and this is one of his better books IMO. Ben Dooley is probably one of the better audiobook readers I have ever listened to. He makes the books very exciting.
