Publisher's summary

As children, we dreamt of the wonderful things we were going to do when we were grown-ups.

Now that we’re grown-ups, why aren’t we out there, living the lives of our dreams?

This fun and original guide will teach you how to bypass your self-doubt and take ACTION.

Using her experience as a storyteller, broadcaster, and (undercover) life-coach, Clare Bowditch collaborates with neuroscientist Dr Charlotte Keating to detail useful Cognitive Behavioural Therapy concepts that will help you tame your inner critic. With practical steps and Clare’s trademark humour and intimate storytelling style, Tame Your Inner Critic will teach you the skills to retrain your brain and achieve your big fat dreams.

Clare Bowditch is an ARIA award-winning musician, a Logie award-nominated actor, and has been named Rolling Stone Woman of the Year for her contribution to culture. In 2019 Clare Bowditch released her debut best-selling memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl, which was short-listed for Australian Audiobook of the Year, and won an ABIA for Best New Australian Writer. In 2010, Clare overcame her Gen-Xer cynicism and trained to become a life coach with a specialty in teaching big-hearted humans how to overcome their self-doubt. Since then she’s had the pleasure of sharing speaking bills with the likes of Brené Brown and Marianne Williamson, where she is best known for teaching large audiences to overcome their collective terror of public singing, and sing anyway, in three part harmony, in fifteen minutes or less.

great concept

the storyteller's tone of voice at times
it was just to high pitched for me personally.

Not a fan of the sound effects.

The material itself has some pretty useful information, but I was not a fan of the sound effects and playful banter. I found it to be quite annoying and distracting, but I guess everyone is different.

Solid advice. Immensely fun.

5 chapters, all under 30 minutes, but solid advice for dealing with your inner critic. I was shocked to find that my inner critic is a mean five year old named Jimbo.

Some good tips

I wasn’t excited about the way it was presented. Some things were repetitive or lingered to get to the point. It’s set up more like a podcast. So the style might appeal to someone else more than it did for me. However, I did enjoy some if the tips and activities they presented in this book/podcast 5 part series.

Silly fun but it's also extremely helpful

I will agree with another reviewer and say that there is a level of silliness to this audiobook that SOME people will find off putting, perhaps more-so if they are listening to this out loud in a public place. But it's meant to be fun, put some ear buds in and relax a little. It's meant to be light hearted and I found it quite entertaining. I think this book is a great introduction to helping yourself tame the inner critic, I read a similar book years ago, I belive it was called "Taming Your Inner Gremlin." which was also quite funny and helpful. This audiobook was along the same lines of giving your inner critic a name and a physical identity. It makes you see how silly and wierd some of the thoughts we have in our head can be, while helping you understand where you may have picked them up along the way in your lifetime and how to put them to rest. Humor can make things that seem big and intimidating in your mind shrink down to reality. Sometimes you just need to laugh and look at things differently. FYI: I think high school kids would definately benefit from this book as well. It's not boring, only a few hours long and really... who doesn't need to silence their inner critic? The sooner the better! Start enjoying your life!

Tame Your Inner Critic - ok plus

I like that the audio included music and stories, not just a dry lecture on a much needed topic. (Some parts are corny, but still appreciated.) I will probably listen again multiple times in the future for a refresher.

The production value is excellent, it helps with CBT, and it’s funny and nice to listen to the performers.
