Great New YA/Teen Fantasy Romance

This is a fun YA/Teen Fantasy! This audiobook has action, suspense, romance, Angels, Nephilims, fairies, and werewolves.

Narration was good and brought the story to life.

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and getting to know Chloe. One minute she is a normal teen and the next the world she knows collapses and she finds herself learning that not all is what it seems.

I’m looking forward to book 2! I’ll have to get it as soon as it comes out! This is one of my favorite genres and I throughly enjoyed the characters and story line.

Good Start!

Overall 3.5 stars

Sword and Stilettos is the first book in the Enlighten series by Kristin D. Van Risseghem and narrated by Sofia Willingham. This is my first book by Kristin, I really enjoyed the story and Sofia has done a good job narrating.

The story follows Zoe as she learns about a supernatural world and her place in it. This is a really sweet story, Zoe is one of the kindest most caring characters I have read about, even dealing with mean girls and high school drama, she handles things with grace and dignity. Zoe is the definition of a sweet girl next door type of character. Her response to the supernatural world is great, an event happens and she isn't in denial, she realizes the supernatural exists, she isn't upset about things being kept from her, she just has a lot of questions and isn't afraid to ask them. She's handling things pretty great but she is also worried if she can do what everyone thinks she can. I like how concerned she is about people, how she truly cares and shows people that she does.

Without giving too much away, I think there is a sort of love triangle going on. I like both Kieran who is Zoe's best friend, and the new guy, Shay. Both are great and have Zoe's best interest at heart. I don't want to see either one of them hurt, Zoe does make her choice early in the book, and things seem fine, I have a guess what might eventually happen, but only time will tell.

The story was interesting with a lot of supernatural elements all combined to tell the story. There are angels and demons, fae and shifters, and who knows what else. The mythology behind each species is slowly being revealed and I find it interesting how the characters know of each other but don't really interact but each has a stake in Zoe. The powers that each of the supernaturals has are great, I loved seeing them in action during the action scenes. The overall story was good, the only problem that I had was some of the repetitiveness of somethings and there was something with the storyline that didn't add up but I can't remember what.

Sword and Stilettos was a very sweet and entertaining story, filled with first love, action, magic, and has a prophecy yet to be fulfilled. I was lucky enough to receive the audio version which I highly enjoyed. Things are just getting started and I am really interested in seeing where the story goes, up next is Daggers and Dresses.

Fun YA series that I'll be following!

I had a hard time getting into this book, but it finally picked up for me after 3-4 chapters and then I couldn't stop listening. It's a fun YA novel full of magic, action, fairies, angels, werewolves, demons, etc. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next book in the series. In fact, I already checked on audible for other books by this author, and though the next in this series isn't out, there are a few other novels, one about one of the angels and 2 about the fairies in this book, that I plan on listening to while waiting for the next in this series.
The narration was okay, a bit stilted and choppy at times. I sped it up to x1.25 and it was better, but still a little off. I think it's one of the reasons it took me a minute to get into the story; however, once I did get into it and changed the speed, the narration didn't bother me as much. I received a review copy at my request and voluntarily reviewed.

You won’t want to stop listening!

I loved this story! One day Zoey is a normal, sheltered girl, til she is thrown into a world where angels and demons are searching for the child if a prophecy. I got sucked into this story! Listening to Zoey and she steps into the world of the enlightened and tried to figure out her place in it. I can’t wait to listen to book two and hear how Zoey grows into her purpose, as she continues to trust her new friends and get ready for what's to come. There seemed to be an issue with the audio in a few spots where a sentence is repeated twice. That’s why I gave a 4 star for performance.

If you love stories involving angels, You will love this book!
Zoe is 17 and just a normal teenage, coffee loving girl in Minnesota, until one day.
I do love how Zoe is thrust into a world where angels exist and a battle over a future prophecy is the focus of all the super naturals she meets.
Zoe is a believable 17 year old wrestling with her world being turned upside down and slowly coming to terms with her possible roll all while battling a mean girl, falling in love and learning how to set boundaries with her friendships.
I loved this book and listened to the audio version.
Sofia did a great job giving a voice to all the characters and helping to immerse you in the world.
There were a few doubled parts that might need a clean up, my only nitpick!

Geared to a younger audiance than I was expecting.

I was expecting a young adult book in this is definitely more for a pre-teen/young teen based audience. The narrator increases the youthful feel of the book. I felt the main character was definitely immature for a 17 year old who is supposed to save the world. I feel like in reality there's a whole range of maturity levels in teenagers but to have a teenager who is supposed to be coming into powers still acts like a junior high kid is not the kind of character I want to read about.

Young Adult Romance novel

I would like to thank Kristin D. Van Risseghem for a copy of this audiobook for an honest review.

This is my first book by Kristin. So the book has a pretty cliche YA formula but there is nothing wrong with that! It’s similar to Mortal Instrument. There are angels, demons, nephilim, werewolves and fairies with a touch of suspense and romance. There are interesting characters like Kieran and Shay. Zoe’s character was harder to root for. She is almost 18 but her maturity level felt very young and naive. She gets better in the later chapters but it’s pretty hard in the beginning. There is an insta - love triangle which I enjoy. Narration was good, I listened to it around 1.5 speed.

slow teen drama

I picked this book because it was advertised as being a clean YA fantasy. I didn't find it to be particularly clean or really a fantasy. It was predominately a teen drama, centering around the relationship of a girl and two guys. There was an awful lot of pointless teen drama, which was more the focus of the book than the fantasy storyline. The world was inconsistent, with prom drama taking priority over the end of the world narrative in a few spots. As far as being clean, there was some language, and an awful lot of kissing, innuendo, daydreaming about kissing, sneaking a guy into a girls room multiple times, etc. I consider clean to mean no sex / language / innuendo, and was surprised that it was advertised as clean with the amount of innuendo and inclusion of some language. I would expect it to be rated TVMA if it were on tv.
The narrator was very slow, I like to listen to the narration at normal speed but listened to this at double speed and it sounded close to normal. I felt like the narration was very flat and almost monotone. I will not be listening to anything else by this narrator, or reading anything else by this author.

Concept is interesting

I received a free audio copy of this book directly from the author for an honest review.

I really wanted to loved this book the concept of the book is very interesting however a concept isn’t always enough. The love triangle with a soulmate/instalove had no real tension and considering a great deal of the book is around the romance side I actually found myself a little bored rather than thinking my usual ‘aww’. Parts of the story were a little bit slow for my liking too and characters maybe not as developed as I would like. Saying that I absolutely adored Sidelle she is definitely a character that has been thought through and is really interesting. The plot was overall interesting so will definitely try the next one hopefully it’ll improve. I’m wondering if I should of had the ebook rather than audio but I found speeding up the audiobook made it a bit easier to enjoy as narrator was very lilting and made my mind wander at times.

AMAZING!!!!

I really wasn't sure if I would like this book, as it is not really my type of read, but I am so so glad that I did give it a listen.

The narrator was fantastic, and really engaged me in the storyline. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to her, and I was hooked from the start. I really came to love all the characters like they were my own friends, I mean c'mon, who wouldn't want friends like them?

The plot is so not my typical thing to listen to / read, but after listening to this I will definitely be listening to more from this author, this narrator, and genre.

Highly recommended!

Swords & Stilettos

This book is a paranormal YA romance. The FMC Zoe's life changes when she turns 18 years old. She has to try to save the world and is trying to fulfill the Prophecy. She finds out that her best friend is a guarding angel. The beginning was a little slow, but it picks up quickly. I really enjoyed the book once the action started. I would be interested in seeing where the book goes.

OK

Any additional comments?

This is what I would call a typical YA book. It had all the ingredients of what I would expect in there: love triangle (which I hate!), teen angst, prophecy, the female teen didn't know about her background, guardian who falls in love with her, school, she has to save the world, training, etc.
There is nothing wrong with this but I tend to find this to be over used and at times boring because it is not original. This is not to say the book is bad but it is nothing either.

Others might like it a lot more then I did especially YA.

I thought the narrator was great, she voiced all the characters.
