Of especially naughty children, it is sometimes said: “They must have been raised by wolves.” The Incorrigible children actually were. Discovered in the forests of Ashton Place, the Incorrigibles are no ordinary children: Alexander keeps his siblings in line with gentle nips; Cassiopeia has a bark that is (usually) worse than her bite; and Beowulf is alarmingly adept at chasing squirrels.

Publisher's summary
Only one place will take him now, and that's a home school run by the Applewhites, a chaotic and hilarious family of artists. The only one who doesn't fit the Applewhite mold is E.D., a smart, sensible girl who immediately clashes with the unruly Jake.
Jake thinks surviving this one will be a breeze...but is he really as tough or as bad as he seems?
Critic reviews
"Robert Sean Leonard misses not a beat as he rolls along with this free-flowing family. Even as the crises reach a crescendo, Leonard's characterizations add dimension to the production. Don't miss this recording!" (AudioFile)
"Clever, clever. Tolan has pulled off something special here." (Booklist)
"Laugh-out-loud novel.... Running beneath the narrative that gently pokes fun at everything from sculpture to TV documentaries, though, is also the story of a boy allowing himself to belong and begin to discover his own potential." (School Library Journal)

Story
When we last saw Zippy, she was oblivious to the storm that was brewing in her home. Her mother, Delonda, had literally just gotten up off the couch and ridden her rickety bicycle down the road. Her dad was off somewhere, gambling or "working." And Zippy was lost in her own fabulous world of exploring the fringes of Moorland, Indiana.

He wasn't born with the name Maniac Magee. He came into this world named Jeffrey Lionel Magee, but when his parents died and his life changed, so did his name. And Maniac Magee became a legend. Even today kids talk about how fast he could run; about how he hit an inside-the-park "frog" homer; about how no knot, no matter how snarled, would stay that way once he began to untie it. But the thing Maniac Magee is best known for is what he did for the kids from the East Side and those from the West Side.

Eleven-year-old Nan Sparrow is quite possibly the best climber who ever lived - and a girl. But when Nan gets stuck in a deadly chimney fire, she fears her time has come. Instead, she wakes to find herself in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Huddled in the corner is a mysterious creature - a golem - made from ash and coal. Little boys, some as young as 6, spent their long days, not playing or studying, but sorting coal in dusty, loud, and dangerous conditions. Many of these breaker boys worked 10 hours a day, six days a week all for as little as 45 cents a day. Child labor was common in the United States in the 19th century. It took the compelling, heart breaking photographs of Lewis Hine and others to bring the harsh working conditions to light.

Excellent! This is our most replayed audio book
Any additional comments?
My12 year old girls and I think this book was excellent. The story is excellent as is the narrator. We have all listened to this numerous times (daughter says more like a gazillion). In fact when looking for new audio books for a recent road trip we all agreed that if we could just find another book as good as this one we'd all be happy.
We can't wait until her next book is on audible! Yippie!!!!

One Major Flaw
If you're teaching this along with the print novel, be aware that the chapters of the book to not match with chapters in the audiobook. This audiobook is divided into 8 chapters, but there are 30 chapters in the book. I had to manually save a bookmark at the end of every chapter to make it work for our in-class readings. Quite a pain and a waste of time! Otherwise, the reader is good, and the story is solid.
