Parapsychologist Sam Towne believes that ghosts come from the human mind, not from “beyond”. To prove his theory, he invites eight volunteers, including skeptical reporter Joanna Cross, to take part in an experiment.

In a series of seances they invent “Adam Wyatt,” a tragic Revolutionary War hero, and are thrilled when he starts rapping on tables and spelling out messages. But when members of the group begin dying in horrifying ways, it becomes clear that Adam has taken on a strange and dangerous life of his own—one feeding on their very thoughts and emotions.

Now Sam and Joanna must destroy Adam before he destroys everything in their world—and even the love they have found for each other turns into an endless, terrifying, inescapable nightmare …

A mediocre read, perhaps a bit held back by its context

I went into this with high expectations, having had the novel recommended to me by another horror fan. I was unfortunately disappointed. Although the audiobook presents an adequate performance, I was not impressed with the story. I have read almost everything the genre of horror fiction has to offer, from the subtle to the grotesque, and I guess I was hoping for more. But I assume that's the problem when one reads a lot—my expectations have now been raised to the point where not just any story will satisfy me. This is not to claim any kind if horror snobbery. I like the standard Stephen King novel as much as the next guy (though I do have a problem with Dean Koontz.) I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of Thomas Ligotti. Oh well.

A real treat for horror fans

What an insanely spooky horror story-- I am actually covered in goose bumps because I'm so chilled. It's like something out of the Twilight Zone but more terrifying-- the ending is clever and great. Surprised this hasn't gotten more acclaim-- what a pleasant surprise this was.
