Publisher's summary

Cyborg samurai Cat LeBlanc takes charge when aliens overrun a city—only to discover humans may be the greater threat—in this cyberpunk adventure.

A small city mostly populated by well-to-do retirees, Burlington, Vermont, is now home to the Antithesis. The alien flora has taken root underground and throughout the surrounding woodlands, giving birth to monstrous beings driven by instinct to consume Earth's own living creatures. With only three rookie samurai to protect them and resources dwindling fast, the people of Burlington are facing extinction.

Cat LeBlanc's success against the Antithesis in the megacity of New Montreal has raised her profile amongst the samurai. And despite her antiauthoritarian attitude and appetite for destruction in combat, she's been assigned to assume command of Burlington's defenses. Against her better judgment—and though it means taking time away from her girlfriend, Lucy, and their adopted gang of children, "the kittens"—Cat accepts the mission.

Accompanied by pyrotechnic nun Gomorrah, Cat finds Burlington's downtown is indeed struggling to survive, but the privileged residents of River Heights thrive behind the protection of their privately funded militia. Worse, the undisciplined trio of samurai-in-training she's supposed to lead are variously arrogant, rebellious, and insecure. Now, Cat must forge a fighting force out of them while playing politics with the city's wealthiest power brokers.

Unfortunately, their enemy doesn't also suffer from political and personal conflicts. The Antithesis is of one mind, a hive determined to spread their contagion across Earth. And if Cat can't rally the samurai, soldiers, and citizens of Burlington to work together, the fall of the city may foretell humanity's eventual fate . . .

Another fantastic addition

The characters continue to develop, especially Lucy, and we get to see more to Cat than just isolated fights. I look forward to more books.

Good

I like that the fifth book of this series is not just an ever increasing escalation of difficulty. The challenge is difficult, but it is proportional to the characters growth from the last book and more just a different type of problem than straight escalation.

Progression stalled out about four books ago...

If you want tons of awesome action, this book is for you. If you want an LGBT relationship where the people act like normal people instead of whatever paradise most romance books have, then this book is for you. If you want a book with serious stakes but still have laugh out loud silliness at times, then this book is for you. If you want a snarky morally grey, but still caring protag, then this book is for you. If you want a progression litrpg with tangible and quantifiable growth, then this book is NOT for you.
While the author is good at writing interesting stories, they kind of fail pretty consistently at the progression part. SCS is no exception. Nothing has really changed from the first book, it feels pretty much the same just with different cat puns. Which are hilarious, but i kind of expected at this point for her to have done something other than buy funny named bomb. Sigh, there was a surprise at the end, but it is sudden and completely random and wasn't even her idea. I don't know but this whole hing feels like Raven is seriously underutilizing the potential of their characters.

Another good entry

Happy this one came out fast. Good attention to shifting plot and differing problems so it isn't just "shoot the bigger aliens with bigger guns" every installment. The social commentary sticks to variety with the good undertone of the Cyberpunk setting, Kat keeps growing as a character and that's nice. better yet, Lucy greatly benefited this volume, she was bugging me and coming across kind of ungrateful and rude to Kat in the previous books, coming across as needy and NOT understanding that her girlfriend has entirely new and huge responsibilities. Having her play a very real and important role in this crisis really fleshed her out and gave the character a chance to see the problems from Kats viewpoint and NOT come across as ungrateful and bitchy in regards to the new Samurai life. makes me happy that she actually appreciates Kat and what she has dome for Lucy and all the orphans, given the setting, they are so beyond lucky, and they should know it. Would have liked a little more of Gamora BUT that's fine lol she will be there later I'm sure.
