Publisher's summary

Don't simply show your data - tell a story with it!

Storytelling with Data teaches you the fundamentals of data visualization and how to communicate effectively with data. You'll discover the power of storytelling and the way to make data a pivotal point in your story. The lessons in this illuminative text are grounded in theory but made accessible through numerous real-world examples - ready for immediate application to your next graph or presentation.

Storytelling is not an inherent skill, especially when it comes to data visualization, and the tools at our disposal don't make it any easier. This book demonstrates how to go beyond conventional tools to reach the root of your data and how to use your data to create an engaging, informative, compelling story. Specifically, you'll learn how to:

  • Understand the importance of context and audience
  • Determine the appropriate type of graph for your situation
  • Recognize and eliminate the clutter clouding your information
  • Direct your audience's attention to the most important parts of your data
  • Think like a designer and utilize concepts of design in data visualization
  • Leverage the power of storytelling to help your message resonate with your audience

Together, the lessons in this book will help you turn your data into high-impact visual stories that stick with your audience. Rid your world of ineffective graphs, one exploding 3D pie chart at a time. There is a story in your data - Storytelling with Data will give you the skills and power to tell it!

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.

Very insightful and actionable

As a management consultant, I found this book incredibly applicable to my work. The book is extremely insightful, and does a great job of laying the foundations of persuasive presentations in plain sight. I was apprehensive about an audiobook version of this book, given how much it relies on visual senses, but I found the audible version almost perfect, with the PDF attachment very easy to follow along to - something that the narration has been modified to ensure. I would highly recommend this to everyone who, like me, has had experience with storytelling with data, but lacks a concrete and replicable framework to think about how to organize stories and design visualizations for maximum impact.

Great Author not for an audio book

I think this author is excellent and the book is useful with the attached described but this is a horrible audiobook. Although it is expected that a audiobook on visual is not going to be ideal the audio book version should have more descriptions and less please see accompanying visual. Then there is just a short description on the attachment forcing the listener to go to the attachment, not ideal for an audiobook.

Great Tutorial on presenting information

I found this useful for preparing reports, graphs, or even getting your points across in an email. It talks about presenting information in the best way so that you will be heard. It was practical and good for anyone in the corporate world.

Great for an audiobook

Obviously the material is very hard to present in an audiobook, but this does an excellent job. I usually do have my laptop open with the supplementary material, but it still worth getting the audiobook because I can do chores, etc and only glance at the screen occasionally. Highly recommended!

Not a good topic for an audio book

As other people stated, this book is not a good fit for an audio book. Audible hasn't yet figured out how to display graphical content in the app in a user friendly way, and this book is riddled with graphics. This rating is not fault of the book itself, but of Audible's way they handle this type of book.

broad, informative and easy to understand

very practical and easy to understand for any non-designer such as researchers, engineers, product managers and business people to understand visualization.

audible is probably not the best formate to deliver because it contains a lot of valuable visual examples in case study.

Difficult, but worth it!

It was difficult to listen. I am sure it would have been worth to read. It is a great start in turning boring data into creative storytelling.

The Best Nonfiction Audiobook Production Ive Heard

Data & visualization have to be the hardest kind of content to dab to an audiobook, but the editors, producers, and by all means the voice actress have masterfully taken on the challenge to creed a book that is memorable without looking at a single illustration.

Why do Authors choose to read their own work?

My review is based on listening to this book for less than three minutes. Her voice is so gratingly throaty and woke American, her pronunciation, rythme and reading speed so very erratic, resulting in the reading being confusing, and difficult to understand. Three minutes was all that I could take before, sadly abandoning the book on a subject that interest me.

A must read for Business Analysts Everywhere!

If you are a Business analyst starting out this book is full of useful information and practical examples of how to visual your data and get your point across. And even if you are not a Business Analyst, in my my experience most jobs have an element of communicating your data within your company, this book will help you do just that. Loved it.

Good but basic introduction

Good book, well delivered but most useful for new analysts. As an experienced Analysis Manager all I took away was that I was already doing everything correctly.

Read by the author

This can be an introductory book to know some visualisation principles, but you'd better learn some programmable tools to produce your own graphics.

Less is More

As me being minimalist I find out that data visualization is much easier when less is more and that’s exactly what I took from this book. Get rid of all distractions, nonsense and fluff from your charts and then tell them the story.
