Publisher's summary

Young Mackinsi Wrighton has always been a dreamer. After he accidentally uncovers a hidden world around him, he discovers he is a Stormbreaker...a warrior of light destined to face an ancient evil called "Destroyer". Possessing supernatural powers and weapons he has no idea how to use, Mackinsi must unite the other Stormbreakers against Destroyer's fiends before Destroyer pulls our dimension into a relic of evil called the Heartstone.

Along his quest, Mackinsi will find love, loss, and adventure as well as a secret that will shake the very foundation of reality itself.

From sword fights on the skyscrapers of New York City to the underwater grottoes of prophecy, Stormbreaker will take you on an action-packed thrill ride of imagination and modern-day magic and leave you breathless. Described as a combination of The Matrix, Constantine, and the Lord of the Rings, Stormbreaker is a modern fantasy brimming with originality.

Entertaining story!

I almost gave up on this story and I’m so glad I didn’t! Instead, I restarted it and gave it my full attention. After the first 10 minutes, I was hooked. I ended up finishing the book in one sitting.....I stayed up til 3am because I couldn’t stop listening. The narration was great, too. Clinton Herigstad did an amazing job telling the story and giving each character a unique voice. I would love to listen to more of his work. So to sum it up, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by the story and narration. I definitely recommend the listen! Going to bed now!!

Stormbreaker was definitely a book to enjoy!

Normally I avoid books written by men. There tends to be a certain emotion that I find missing in those stories. I thoroughly enjoyed Matt Sconce’s writing in Stormbreaker. This story is action packed with tons of growth from the characters. I totally loved Mac and pretty much all of the supporting characters. I’m not really loving bad guys so although they are well developed I can’t say I love them. Each scene described throughout this book is very unique and well developed.
Clinton Herigstad did a great job narrating the story. He truly brought these characters to life. I love how he distinguished the voices of the characters. I must say when I read this at night and started to fall asleep the Destroyer’s voice totally woke me up. It’s dark and gravely. Honestly a perfect voice for a dark character.
Overall, the production was great. The whole thing flowed wonderfully. Each character served a purpose and grows throughout the story. I definitely wouldn’t have minded hearing more to this story, but the ending went well nonetheless. I really enjoy books that involve both the subject of creation and destruction. I may just have to read that book again soon.

Well written, well-read, and an evenly paced read

The Review

From the audiobook’s first pages the author and narrator deliver a tense filled, heart-pounding scene that sets the tone for the modern-day fantasy thriller. The book never lets up on the intensity of the plot as the protagonist experiences a swirl of wonder and horror as his world flips upside down.

The story was rich with character development and world-building mythology that really sucks the reader into the narrative immediately. The protagonist is relatable and gives readers a typical yet rememberable origin of the young man in the midst of trying to find himself and in the process discovers how important he is.

The Verdict

Well written, well-read, and an evenly paced read, author Matt Sconce’s “Stormbreaker” is the perfect first book in what deserves to be a fantastic fantasy series. The narrator captures the emotions and character interactions perfectly in the audiobook, and the story will keep the reader hanging on the narrator’s every word as the story heads towards its epic conclusion. Adventure awaits!

If you like adventure, suspense, and action then you will love this story! Matt Sconce's creative use of imagery makes you feel like you are part of the story. This would be a great story to use in the classroom to teach the hero's journey. Students would love this story since it the protagonist is a high school student. The kindle version is long (just over 9 hours) which is a bit much for me since I tend to read fast, but it was enjoyable. The person reading the story was never dull or boring and added a variety of voices to make the story more interesting. Overall I would highly recommend this story for all ages! I'm looking forward to a sequel or a movie adaptation.

A Modern Fantasy Adventure, Indeed!

The story was reminiscent of the same kind of fantasy fun I've grown up with since I was a youth! And, kudos to the narrator for his vocal skills and characterizations. They felt spot on and never distracted from the story. In addition to being an author, Matt Sconce is also a filmmaker, and as such he was very good at not only making you feel like you were watching a movie, but by reading/listening to it you were a part of it. He weaves the kind of imagery that made me think of 80s/90s fantasy adventures, as well as the kind of themes we experience in good versus evil classics such as Star Wars, the Matrix, and Lord of the Rings. That being said, I will say the book was also more PG-13 than I expected. I would not say this is a book for kids, but definitely more for teens and young adults. One significant highlight for me was when Mackinsi (the protagonist) made his speech when he first meets at the Gathering. I'm not a teen anymore, but that made me identify with the lead more than any other section. That, for me, was the kind of moment I envision for myself as the hero in my story. Well written, Matt, I enjoyed it!

Best Book In Years!

I loved everything about this book. The narrative is so awesome I hope this becomes a show/anime/movie/game something. If I had to pick anything to not like it’d be the prologue, but that’s only because it isn’t a part of the story. I recommend this book to anyone.

Good vs Evil

This storyline has potential. I became involved from the beginning. Kinda yawned some in middle. But it picked back up to a great ending with it being open to future battles.
The narrator gave a great performance also.

Excellent Adventure

This book is a must-read! It has everything I love in an epic story: adventure, mysteries, romance, good vs. evil.... I love the rhythm of the development of the plot and subplots. Each detail is worth pausing for, holding and inspecting. Yet your questions and hopes for the characters propell you forward for answers and untangling puzzles that they encounter. I greatly enjoyed this tale, and I highly recommend it! Jump into an adventure.

Grand adventure!

I loved the originality of the story. Mac is a kid who learns he's a Stormbreaker. He's always had a strange mark but never had any idea what it meant. Once he finds out there'sno going back
This story is full of adventure and action. There isn't a dull moment as each word takes the reader closer to the climax. The narration is as good as the story. Excellent story!
