'When you come to the house, you will hear strange tales. They will tell you in the village that it is haunted, but you must not be afraid. When the time comes ... you will know what to do.' Mr Blunden's words echoed through Lucy's ears as she explored the house. It was such an old house that it seemed to Lucy as if all the past was gathered up inside it as if in a great box; as though it had a life of its own that continued to exist just beyond the reach of her eyes and ears.

Publisher's Summary
Clive King's wonderful classic, Stig of the Dump, is now available to download, complete and unabridged and read by the brilliant Tony Robinson.
Barney is a solitary little boy, given to wandering off by himself. One day he is lying on the edge of a disused chalk-pit when it gives way and he lands in a sort of cave. Here he meets 'somebody with a lot of shaggy hair and two bright black eyes' wearing a rabbit skin and speaking in grunts. He names him Stig. Of course nobody believes Barney when he tells his family all about Stig, but for Barney cave-man Stig is totally real. They become great friends, learning each other's ways and embarking on a series of unforgettable adventures.

Childhood, welcome back
A very long time ago my infant school teacher read us all Stig of the Dump. Out loud and in its entirety. She was better at it than Tony Robinson or maybe it's just that my 6 year old mind was more impressed by her rendition. Whichever it was, the title has been in my head ever since, along with at least some of the scenes in the story.
It's a simple kind of story but with enough nuance to be interesting and if you are listening along with younger readers nobody will get lost and nobody should get bored. The language is simple without being condescending and Robinson actually does a very good job with it.
It's about the kind of everyday adventures that I had as a boy with just a little bit of extension to make them that bit more exciting. The kind of thing that we certainly used to believe was just about possible before, sadly, we learned better. Share it with a child before they learn better.

Sixty Years to get round to read it.
I am now a State Pensioner reading and listening to books that should have been read many years back in my youth. S of the D was on my wish list and have not been disappointed. Barny's adventures with Stig took me back to my youth and into the Dump. This will now be recommended to my Grand Children and to be read before getting too old. That said, we are never too old.

Great blast from the past!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Its a great story for kids but also for adults wanting some nostalgia
Have you listened to any of Tony Robinson’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Tho I do like Tony, his work and the way he presented this book, the only negative thing I would say is that he made the characters sound a lot younger than they actually were.
Any additional comments?
Loved the book. I know its a kids book but it took me back to the days of my childhood.

There came an elastic aftershock of creaks and groans and then, softly softly, a chinking shower of rubbled cement. Leaves calmed and trunks stood serene. Where, not a minute before, there had been a suburb, there was now only woodland standing amid ruins. There is no warning. No chance to prepare. They arrive in the night: thundering up through the ground, transforming streets and towns into shadowy forest. Buildings are destroyed.

Story
There came an elastic aftershock of creaks and groans and then, softly softly, a chinking shower of rubbled cement. Leaves calmed and trunks stood serene. Where, not a minute before, there had been a suburb, there was now only woodland standing amid ruins. There is no warning. No chance to prepare. They arrive in the night: thundering up through the ground, transforming streets and towns into shadowy forest. Buildings are destroyed.
