Publisher's summary

Newcomers to the workplace. The recently fired. Those desiring to advance with their current employer. Those eager to move on. Many have found what they do for a living deadening, disappointing, and tedious. For these reasons and others, one in five Americans changes jobs every year.

Drawing on his extensive career in the nonprofit, commercial, and public-service realms, Richard Levy helps listeners think about the future creatively and prepare for it resourcefully. He offers recipes for moving up in an appealing organization or moving out gracefully to a better position elsewhere. Start Now offers concrete, actionable, practical advice:

  • Take full advantage of school, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues.
  • Learn how to succeed at work without being imprisoned there.
  • Ask others for help compellingly.

In all of these ways and more, Reynold shares his extensive experience as a professor, a trustee, a consultant, a public speaker, an author, and a chief executive officer at the 92nd Street Y, the AT&T Foundation, the International Rescue Committee, and Lincoln Center.

Inspiring and Instructive

This book could have been subtitled “Because that meaningful life is out there...”. While Reynold Levy captures the adventure of seeking a challenging worklife, his lessons apply equally well to seeking a purpose-driven path beyond the workplace. Indeed, through colorful, powerful illustrations from his own life and others he shows that our vocations and avocations make up the whole person. He casts aside the tired image that a life in business and accumulation of wealth is of the highest value. He gives equal and compelling arguments for devoting oneself to a career in the not-for-profit sector and public service.

For the recent college grad or entrepreneur, Dr. Levy empowers the reader to chart your own course into the workplace; for the mid-career professional he offers specific tactics for networking, interviewing, and getting started on the right foot; and for those in the final stages of their work life he reminds us that wisdom and experience is of great value and mentoring others is our greatest legacy. I was especially touched by the story of the author learning at his father’s side and absorbing the lesson that listening to others is the key to success in many walks and roles in life. Our society would benefit if we all practiced this art. In the end, the book’s title says it all: there’s no time like the present, so Start Now!

off course

had to fast forward to chapter 2 chapter 1 was terrible, I thought the author would get to the point however the consistency of bragging about political connections turned the title of the book into a Hilary Clinton promo. don't waste your time!
