Resumen del Editor

The year is 1901. Germany's navy is the second largest in the world; their army, the most powerful. But with the exception of a small piece of Africa and a few minor islands in the Pacific, Germany is without an empire. Kaiser Wilhelm II demands that the United States surrender its newly acquired territories: Guam, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. President McKinley indignantly refuses, so with the honor and economic future of the Reich at stake, the Kaiser launches an invasion of the United States, striking first on Long Island.

Now the Americans, with their army largely disbanded, must defend the homeland. When McKinley suffers a fatal heart attack, the new commander in chief, Theodore Roosevelt, rallies to the cause, along with Confederate general James Longstreet. From the burning of Manhattan to the climactic Battle of Danbury, American forces face Europe's most potent war machine in a blazing contest of will against strength.

What could have been

Overall a great read or listen. Any fan of alternate history should find this story enjoyable. The author covers a wide range of historical events ranging from the tensions between Northern/Southern issues following the American Civil War, the Native American reservations, the political climate in Germany, and world events at that time. To spin them all together to create a believable event that could have happened. With memorable characters and face paced action I couldn't stop reading it.

Stands for Par.

It was a good listen, good narration, and I love the idea of it all. The alternative thinking. It was worth a credit for sure. Wasn’t the best wasn’t the worst, and I feel it was a good purchase. Just wasn’t a mind blower or anything, still good though.

Could Pre-WW I Germany invade the US in 1901

Well, yes - maybe. Turn of the 20th century Germany had the second most powerful navy in the world. It's merchant marine was one of the world largest and it's fleet of luxury liners challenged England. Could it have moved 30,000 to 50,000 troops across the Atlantic. Well, yes - if the Kaiser wanted it too.

Would the United States have fallen prey to a sneak invasion? Well, yes- maybe. The US was not in an expansion mindset. We had just fought, and won, a war with Spain and were still trying to figure out what to do with the lslands we had acquired from that escapade.

Congress didn't want to expand the military. Surprise, here's a war with Germany. If history had come to pass the way proposed by the author, this is a reasonably possible tale.

Very Good Performance

If you can get past the initial premise that Germany had the ability to transport and supply an army across the Atlantic with 1901 technology; story is really a pretty well told one. Insite into the thinking two world leaders and their advisors, as well as the solders used a pawns in this giant game.

Really entertaining alternate history

Of course it has impact on some famous people and will be interesting to see if the later books take these changes into account. I look forward to reading the next book!

fun what if...

This story has a very interesting premise, entertaining, and it is enjoyably written and performed, but it is odd that Conroy chose to ignore the existence of the 1892-99 Springfield aka the American Krag. While most if not all state militia would indeed be issued 1884 Trapdoor Springfields. By 1901 enough Krags had been produced in one form or another to outfit all U.S. Regulars. Also the U.S. was already in the process of trialing its replacment. It just seems odd it was never mentioned, or there was no mention of rechambering the Lee-Metfords given as aid to .30-40 Krag. that being said, it's just an odd omission.
