Money - investing, personal finance, and business decisions - is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Your Super-Serious Review of Stacked
"Stacked: Your Super-Serious Guide to Modern Money Management" combines all the real-world money advice you need on topics like budgeting versus tracking, saving versus investing, insurance, estate planning, etc., adds a splash of pop culture references, a sense of humor, and a dash of gamification to make the aforementioned topics bearable and fun. Come prepared, though! There are many lists to make, activities to participate in and scores to tally. This is not a book to read while on a treadmill or to listen to while on a run, you need to be fully present and ready to take action as you read or listen.
I personally found "Stacked" to be the perfect companion to my year-end money review. Chapter by chapter, step by step, the book walked me through all of the financial topics I should be on top of from both a personal and professional perspective. The great thing about "Stacked" is it makes sense for individuals and families at any financial level. It can be used as a guide/reminder or perhaps introduce those newer to proactive money management to topics they had not been addressing previously. It also serves as an impetus to begin those things people tend to put off (e.g., estate planning).
The audiobook is skillfully narrated by Emily Guy Birkin and Joe Saul-Sehy. They're a likable pair whose styles complement one another. Additionally, a host of fun guests stop by and provide additional insight and knowledge which also makes the book feel more conversational. If I had one request from this book that was not fulfilled, it would have been to have more Emily in the narration. She's a strong, knowledgeable female financial writer who makes difficult financial topics approachable. Her voice shines through in the written word, but hearing her on audio reinforces the idea that financial savvy is not a boring lecture you need to receive from a dad-like figure in a suit.
I end this review with a hearty recommendation to read or listen to "Stacked" as soon as you can. It's time to get your finances in order and these two (Emily and Joe) are just the people to guide you through it in a sensible, realistic way that steers clear of some of the less tangible financial advice out there (e.g., manifestation, fake it 'til you make it, skip the latte). Unlike some of the financial books filled with tired tropes, mantras and one-note advice, this is a book you will find yourself referencing time and time again. So, if you borrow it, take copious notes or, save yourself the time and effort and just purchase it!

Great starter book to conceptualize finance
This book is NOT dry! So, I definitely recommend it for people that want to start the journey. I think one of the best items this book covers is the fear of money and the fear of starting to invest your money. There are no promises of great success, but this is the advice that I found about 10 years ago that put me on my path of successful investing. I spent months and months and months gathering the info - Joe and Emily give it to you all in a well though out book.
Shout out to Joe's mom! Thanks for being practical!

Fun and accessible financial overview
This book is a fun and accessible overview for people who are new to personal finance (“I know I need to get my money act together, but I don’t know where to start and it’s all overwhelming - help!”) and those who are familiar with the basics and want to do better. The information is solid; the humor is entertaining (if a little corny); and the action items are realistic and achievable. The audiobook format is especially fun because it includes great clips from the podcast “Stacking Benjamins.”
If there’s one gentle critique, I felt that some chapters could have been re-ordered more helpfully. The first chapter feels a bit overwhelming: calculate the cost of your goals and rate of return you’ll need to reach them. And the psychology of money is so interesting and important that I thought it would be better earlier in the book. All this to say, stick with the book to the end, and you’ll learn a lot and even laugh a little.

Atypical Finance Book
See what I did there?
If you are looking for the typical financial book, this isn't for you. I'm a retired financial advisor and have read my share of finance books. This one is different.
Written in Joe and Emily's (and mom's) unique style, this book covers all the important aspects of financial planning. From the basics to the more complex, it's a great little handbook.
Is it silly? Yes. But does it cover what you need to know? Yes, it does that too.
This book is a great gift for someone you know who just can't stay awake trying to read about finances. And even if you are a long-term financial pro, you just might be reminded of some things you forgot.
