Publisher's summary

My name is Ava Mendoza, and I am a species traitor.

They came hoping to find a new home after their own planet was destroyed, but Earth was dying, as well, and most humans saw their arrival as an invasion. Now, two decades later, the Veilorians have been banished to the District, a fenced-in area on the outskirts of the last known livable land on Earth. Most people do their best to pretend they don’t exist, but not everyone. There are humans, like my cousin, who see them for what they are. Despite the threat of disownment, she married a Veilorian, and now, she, too, lives in the District.

Even before I met Finn, I was determined to stand up for what was right, but from the moment I laid eyes on him, we had a connection I’ve never experienced before. But with the election of a new and radical mayor on the horizon, tensions are high, and people are calling for change. They want to make my cousin’s marriage illegal and punish any human who goes into the District, but I refuse to back down from this fight. No matter the cost.

A strong statement and I loved it

This series brings a number of social issues to light in a way that makes it clear how we should act and how we shouldn't. the hate in the series felt all too real and chilling. love it

Entertaining, interesting alien invasion romance!

Narrator does a great job!! She has a nice tone and good emotion to her voice. Recommend listening experience.

Love that this boxset has both of the books in this duology! Both books were entertaining and I loved the premise! I would’ve liked more resolution for certain things after finishing the second book, but I still really enjoyed both books.

Love Sci-Fi alien type of stories, so I loved that aspect of this story. Add in some romance and I’m there! I also enjoy dystopian type of stories; I do get annoyed at the despicable characters with their depraved minds, but I love to see the rational characters rise above! In this one, aliens come to Earth to find a new hope for life, but of course humans don’t take too kindly to Earth being invaded. Despite the aliens positive aspects, many humans have prejudice against the aliens; there’s some disheartening, sad things going on. Lots of problems arise between the species bringing out the bad sides of many. Ava finds herself knowing what the right thing to do is, but finding it difficult to actually go that direction. Along the way, she connects with alien Finn, but the road is definitely going to be a wild one for these two. Plus, there’s a bit of a love triangle going on. I liked Ava’s sass and strength to stand up for those that need it, but her common sense could use some work. I do really enjoy the connection between Finn and her; things start out rocky, but the chemistry is there.

I don’t want to go too much into the second book; don’t want to give spoilers, but it continues right after the cliffhanger of book 1. For both books, we only get Ava’s POV. Things start similar to book 1, but then go in another dangerous direction. Book 2 is a little slow at times, but still an enjoyable, entertaining read. There’s an adventure through some desolate wastelands in search of hope!

Overall, I really loved both books! Cool premise, interesting scenarios and action, and a super sweet touching romance!

Young Adult

This box set is clearly meant for people who enjoy the young adult genre.
I wish YA books would be in the YA category, or at least have a YA tag, so people like me who don’t like the genre can avoid these books.

I didn’t feel very invested in the main character, and I didn’t particularly like her.
I had a small annoyance.. apparently she ‘doesn’t know when to keep her mouth shut’ and EVERY TIME she displays this behavior, it’s mentioned again and again. Very repetitive.
I didn’t enjoy the romance, but that could be because I just don’t like the YA genre and YA drama.

I do like this is the complete story, and the narration was very good.
I think it’s a good listen for lovers of the YA/ dystopian genre.

I got this Audio Book for free (thanks!). I'm voluntarily leaving this review.

Hope and Faith at it's best

I was so annoyed at some of the absolute garbage (misogynistic) reviews on this book. As I listened it hurt my heart how very realistic this would be in todays world if it happened. Humanity is on a brink in real life and this hit home. Loved the resolution that showed so much hope and renewal of faith while recognizing that sacrifice is sometimes needed to accomplish good and that doing the right thing is worth the cost.

APATHETIC GENERATION

Is the so-called heroine of this story owed something? Is she so unapologetically herself that she's in her right to act superior and all-knowing amongst able to do whatever her apathetic, selfish heart (unless it is for something she desires) desires?!...
It's very annoying that these new authors write about these “strong-willed, empathetic, smart stop at nothing heroines.”
What they are are bad influences on the young women who are reading these books, thinking of self-destructive bull-headed stubborn, immature girls has no space in their brain for any sense only for not settling IE finding any excuse there is to attack everyone else points of view they don't want to be around like potential love interests.
I'm just so done with this bull shit!
