Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

Publisher's Summary
Alexia Tarabotti is labouring under a great many social tribulations.Â
First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead.Â
Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.      Â
Where to go from there? From bad to worse, apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.      Â
With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Or will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?     Â
Soulless is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles and tea drinking. Â

Too many genres elbowing for room
This book is a "steampunk-gothic-Victorian-romance-Regency manners-bodice ripper-supernatural-comedy". For good measure, all of the usual tropes are in here as well; plucky heroine (who puts herself down but comes into her own), muscular Werewolf, effete gay Vampire Lord, evil scientist, long suffering butler ... the list goes on. Phew. And if that sounds a bit much, I think it is actually. I couldn't quite decide what this book wanted to be.
I also found Alexia (our heroine) just plain annoying. The way she treats her so-called "best friend" is just cruel and, yes, I get that the author was trying to poke fun at Jane Austin's sensibilities BUT it's done with a sledge hammer. Just didn't work for me.
The plot definitely picked up in the second half of the book and I did surprise myself by wanting to finish it, so not all bad. I don't find myself desperate to buy the next one or keep this.

Fun steampunkish paranormal romance
I'd been looking forward to reading this for ages but found myself a little bit disappointed. The banter between characters was good and set up for future novels in the series but just felt it was missing something. Maybe needed more sauce, more sense of adventure or danger. Or maybe I'm just suffering from lockdown lacklustre lurgy.

This was great fun!
Intelligent, sarcastic and wholly not overwhelmed by her emotions, it's refreshing to not have the heroine not start out as a blithering mess from a confronting ordeal (or at any point really). Lots of talk of fashion and food but oddly not unpleasantly so. With that in mind though, I was expecting to have a nod to the food in the first chapter when they started to talk about food in the epilogue. So I was a little disappointed that that didn't happen.
The narrator could use some work on her male voices but was definitely channeling both Mrs Bennett and Mrs Elton at some points there. It was perfectly aweful.

Story
When Prudence Alessandra Maccon Akeldama ("Rue" to her friends) is bequeathed an unexpected dirigible, she does what any sensible female under similar circumstances would do: she christens it the Spotted Custard and floats off to India. Soon she stumbles upon a plot involving local dissidents, a kidnapped brigadier's wife, and some awfully familiar Scottish werewolves.

Story
Percival Tunstell loves that his sister and her best friend are building themselves a family of misfits aboard their airship, the Spotted Custard. Of course, he'd never admit that he belongs among them. He's always been on the outside - dispassionate, aloof, and hatless. But accidental spies, a trip to Japan, and one smart and beautiful doctor may have him renegotiating his whole philosophy on life.

Story
Lady Alexia Maccon, soulless, is at it again, only this time the trouble is not her fault. When a mad ghost threatens the queen, Alexia is on the case, following a trail that leads her deep into her husband's past. Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux's latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant. Can Alexia determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria?

Story
Alexia Maccon, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the midafternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears, leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.

Story
Quitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season. Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council, and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all off, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all of London's vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead.

Story
Sophronia's first year at Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has certainly been rousing! For one thing, finishing school is training her to be a spy. Furthermore, Sophronia got mixed up in an intrigue over a stolen device and had a cheese pie thrown at her in a most horrid display of poor manners. Now, as she sneaks around the dirigible school, eavesdropping on the teachers' quarters, she learns that there may be more to a school trip to London than is apparent at first.

Story
Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style - with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what - or who - they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train.

Story
All alone in Singapore, proper Miss Primrose Tunstell must steal helium to save her airship, the Spotted Custard, in a scheme involving a lovesick werecat and a fake fish tail. When she uncovers rumors of a new kind of vampire, Prim and the Custard crew embark on a mission to Peru. There, they encounter airship pirates and strange atmospheric phenomena, and are mistaken for representatives of the Spanish Inquisition. Forced into extreme subterfuge (and some rather ridiculous outfits) Prim must also answer three of life's most challenging questions.
