Publisher's Summary

When is the last time you thought about the state of your soul? The health of your soul isn't just a matter of saved or unsaved. It's the hinge on which the rest of your life hangs. It's the difference between deep, satisfied spirituality and a restless, dispassionate faith. In an age of materialism and consumerism that tries to buy its way to happiness, many souls are starved and unhealthy, unsatisfied by false promises of status and wealth. We've neglected this eternal part of ourselves, focusing instead on the temporal concerns of the world - and not without consequence. Best-selling author John Ortberg presents another classic that will help you discover your soul - the most important connection to God there is - and find your way out of the spiritual shallow-lands to true divine depth. With characteristic insight and an accessible story-filled approach, Ortberg brings practicality and relevance to one of Christianity's most mysterious and neglected topics.

Good Book - poor narrator

What did you like best about Soul Keeping? What did you like least?

Great Ideas - much of which are a summary of Dallas Willard's thoughts on Spiritual Formation. Ortberg is funny and has a great voice - it's too bad he did not narrate this audio book. It really detracted from his ideas that the narrator failed to capture his humor or proper emphasis.

Dallas Willard for Dummies

I have read several of Dallas Willard's books. Some of them with friends who were equally intent on gleaning just some of the rich insights they presented. And we did, however always with some frustration and disappointment because we knew there was more.
John Ortberg has given people like me—and I know there are more—a gift. His account of his personal pilgrimage with Dallas as his mentor has afforded me a better understanding of some of the concepts I longed to understand from some of Dallas' writings.
Thank you, John. I mean no disrespect for the headline of this review...only gratitude.

Excellent, meditative, and challenging!

"You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life." This book not only delves into why but touches on how. An excellent read and read with excellence. Highly recommended.

Excellent insight into our souls.

Offers encouragement and guidance for nourishing our souls and a better understanding of what and who is primary in our lives. I am more able to seek and hear God's word when focusing on keeping my soul right with God.

Starts slow, ends well

I felt like the beginning took a long time establishing "what is the soul," but maybe that was helpful for some.
Last half was excellent and inspiring.

Good for Dallas Willard fans

Ortberg remembers his friendship with the late author, philosopher, and Christian apologist, and his (Ortberg's) own spiritual development over the course of more than 20 years. He discusses the need of the soul for rest. He is reassuring, even on the subject of the "dark night of the soul." The text is not very demanding (you might want to investigate St. John of the Cross), and it is at its best in the passages on Willard, whose books are very rich and rigorous. All in all, a good introduction to Willard, who is a wise man worth knowing. (His final book is to be published posthumously soon.)

Oh, My Soul

This book was phenomenal! I will listen to it again and again. I’ve never really considered what really constitutes my soul, and how to care for it, until now. The gentleman who read the story did an excellent job as well. The principles contained in the book are not only extremely Biblical, they’re extremely relevant for our time. It’s a love-hate book, really. I loved the idea that God cares that much for us, but hated the fact that I was reminded of the sinfulness I dole out on a daily basis.

Must read if you care for your own soul and/or why

Caring for the soul is like a crystal glass, don't drop it or it shatters.

Superb mind blowing book

This book is the best Ortberg book I have ever read. It is thought provoking, challenging and encouraging. I have read it twice and will go back to it again in the future. He quotes from many sources but in particular refers to the late Dallas Willard. As someone who is particularly interested in soul/spiritual care and pastoral care, I highly recommend it. It will bless and challenge in equal measure.

All good points but none I haven’t heard before

Dallas Willard and John Ortberg have really inspired and encouraged my faith and I would highly recommend their writings. However, having read quite a few of their books, I didn’t find this one added much to my understanding of their theology and key points. It is obviously important to Ortberg to express his respect and admiration for Willard, and he clearly mourns the loss of a close friend and mentor. However, as I listened to this book, I felt a little uncomfortable at the height of the pedestal on which he puts him!
