Publisher's Summary

In Adam Burch's thrilling series debut, a young man must choose between violence and peace in a distant world divided between those who thrive in endless sunlight and those who survive in eternal darkness.

The isolated planet of Tao is a house divided: the peaceful Daysiders live in harmony while the pale Nightsiders pursue power and racial purity through the violent ritual of the Combat.

Edmon Leontes, the gentle son of a ruthless warrior noble and a proud Daysider, embodies Tao's split nature. The product of diametrically opposed races, Edmon hopes to live a quiet life pursuing the music of his mother's people, but his Nightsider father cruelly forces him to continue in his bloody footsteps to ensure his legacy.

Edmon's defiance will cost him everything...and spark a revolution that will shake the foundations of Tao. His choice - to embrace the light or surrender to the darkness - will shape his own fate and that of his divided world.

Meh

In CS Lewis' "Mere Christianity" he points out how problematically overpowering our sex drive is. So why does every blasted book and TV show have to work to prove it. Fade to the morning and get back to the simplistic cartoon characters and, maybe, interesting plot.

Great story, but not for me. However...

During this COVid 19 pandemic situation, I have a lot of time on my hands. With Audible's NEW app I have been able to cull my Audible library (750+) for books that I have started but never finished. "Song of Edmon" is one of those titles, and I gave it a second chance. I am glad that I did. The story line was totally unexpected. Several times in I thought I should abandon the book, but I plugged on. Here's why: 1) The narrator was EXCELLENT. Part way through the book, I pulled up other reviews hoping to find a reason to continue a story that I didn't care for, and was surprised that the narrator was also the author. Adam Burch, I am sure, can make a name for himself purely because of his stellar performance as a narrator. I plunged on, this time listening closer to his inflection, his voicing, everything was IMPECCABLE. The man is a star! I place him along side of Simon Winchester as one of my favorite narrators. 2) Because of Mr. Burch's talent, I was quickly enmeshed in the plot. I then followed his sad, sometimes grisly and unbelievable tale to its conclusion. The story is very dark, and the hero's torment as pitiable. Torture, monsters, gladiators, you name it, Edmon suffered greatly. But he pressed on, as I did, to the very end. 3) The End. Oh - My - God, the ending was so unexpected and BRILLIANT! I kept thinking Edmon was going to cave, and then not, and then again. My ears perked up, and my eyes widened in disbelief. When it was over, it was not over. Finally, it was over and I was happy with the result. Ultimately, it was a very satisfying experience. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars across the board is because it was not my type of story, and I had to be dragged unwillingly through it. It was like taking medicine -- "Here, it's going to taste bad, but you'll feel better in the end."

Excellent performance!

The story was definitely not what I expected, and it was pretty heavy stuff. Lots of loss and heartache, flawed characters, and unexpected twists in the story, I was riveted from the very beginning. I listened to it all day and all night, and all day again, until it was finished. I was a bit skeptical at first when I learned that this book was narrated by the author, but I was pleasantly surprised. As a narrator, Adam Burch is right up there with my favorites, Nick Podehl and Tim Gerard Reynolds. I hope that maybe he'd narrate other sci fi and fantasy books as well -- I am starting to run out of books to listen to in the genres and narrators I enjoy.

A Story of Sex and Sadness

Despite the very vivid sex scenes, I enjoyed the first half of the book. Then the second half started and it was like the main character through a pity party and everyone else was like, "what else can we do to this kid?" Character development does not always have to equal heartache and pain. The ending also bothered me, I stuck around through this whole brutal journey of pain for what? The book to end is what.

Excellent original story preformed brilliantly.

I'd never heard of the author-actor, Adam Burch before this audiobook. This is an excellent original story. Adam brought his story to life with narration as brilliant as the best of the hundreds of audiobooks I've enjoyed.

Not what I thought I was going to read

This was a well written book. That said, it was horrifically sad and awkwardly sexual with the underage homosexual themes. I understand the quirks that come with a coming of age story, but this was definitely not what I thought I was going to listen to by the synopsis.

Amazing narriative, voice, story!

Thank you for an awesome story! I don’t think I have heard many people change their voice in so many ways other than Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy. The story-line was top notch and kept me awake for too long i to the nights. Thanks

Powerful

The author brought Edmon to life and you could feel all the emotions of the main character. I was hooked immediately and as I listened to the book I could also hear the music in my head. Won’t waste another minute I will be starting book 2 Roar of the Storm immediately. Hope this author has more works for Me to devour
