Publisher's Summary

Cab driver Chet Conway was hoping for a good tip from his latest fare, the sort he could spend. But what he got was a tip on a horse race; which might have turned out okay, except that when he went to collect his winnings, Chet found his bookie lying dead on the living room floor. Chet knows he had nothing to do with it - but just try explaining that to the cops, to the two rival criminal gangs who each think Chet's working for the other, and to the dead man's beautiful sister, who has flown in from Las Vegas to avenge her brother's murder.

Great reading of a hilarious novel

Westlake is one of the funniest crime writers around, and this old gem is still funny. But, as good as the writing is, I have to hand it to the reader, who brings the narrator and all the characters to life so wonderfully.

Definitely one of the best readings I've heard yet.

Why Hasn't This One Ever Been Made into a Movie?

It would be the kind of movie that generates catch phrases you use long after the DVD has been remaindered at Walmart (“Well, Robert Mitchum, what now?”) The kind of movie that you get really excited about when you find it in the remaindered bin at Walmart (“Hey, remember this one?”) The kind of movie you make sure your kids see, so you can see them enjoy it for the first time.

Here we have the perfect balance between gasp-producing danger and laughter-inducing dialogue. And Stephen Thorne was the perfect choice for narrator/performer, playing (without overplaying) every line and situation just right.

Westlake is peerless, but this, not his best.

Would you try another book from Donald E. Westlake and/or Stephen Thorne?

This is my 5th or 6th Westlake book and they were fun. This book was too, but any of the others offered by AUDIBLE are better. More fully crafted.

What could Donald E. Westlake have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

More story, more characters, more background on characters.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Stephen Thorne?

Mr. Thorne was excellent. Even his women characters.

What character would you cut from Somebody Owes Me Money?

I am not a literary surgeon, but would have ADDED characters.

Any additional comments?

Westlake and Thorne are excellent overall, but this could be skipped.

Good Story and Excellent Author

It’s very rare that the narrator makes the book come alive but Stephen Thorne has pulled it off. He captivated you from start to finish and adds the right touches of humor in the dialogue. I will look for more works from both the narrator and author.

While the story is well written wit twists and turns. The end is very disappointing.

Classic Westlake fun

If you enjoy comic crime novels where everything goes wrong and then somehow works out for the best, this one is for you

Lightweight Fun

This is Westlake in a frothy and playful mood. The main character, Chet Conway, is more or less dragged kicking and screaming into the role of protagonist. This guy is truly a slacker, though that term didn’t exist when the book was written. In the wrong hands, the story could easily have come off as phony and pointless, but narrator Stephen Thorne does a terrific job of keeping the motor of the rather trifling narrative running and imbuing Conway with a certain feckless charm.

A favorite LOL romp

If you could sum up Somebody Owes Me Money in three words, what would they be?

Funny, romp, timeless

Who was your favorite character and why?

Clearly Chester, our mild mannered hero, full of humor and patience. Smart but not brilliant. I just truly enjoy a protagonist who acts like a real person, even in an improbably story.

What about Stephen Thorne’s performance did you like?

Perfect inflections and interpretation. He nails and brings out all the nuances of the humor and characters. All are individual, very clear, starkly identifiable, and overall, he just breathes life into every single character perfectly.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A hot tip turns into a wild ride.

Any additional comments?

I couldn't have asked for a more perfect reading of this humorous novel. I am so impressed with this narrator. I wish he could read all my favorite books.

Really awful for Westlake

I expected a crazy tale, but this was just ridiculous. It was repetitive and circular, and aside from a few chases, nothing really happened. Improbable misunderstandings among improbable characters. Skip it.
