Ephraim Cutler has blood on his hands and a hellhound on his trail.

When his mother forces him to kill an innocent man, Ephraim Cutler's quiet life in the Appalachian Mountains is thrown into turmoil. With a bounty on his head, Ephraim flees to the hills and hollers, where he discovers that his crime has drawn more than the law's attention - the Devil's in town with his eye on Ephraim's soul. Desperate to escape, Ephraim is torn between two clashing figures: an outcast granny doctor rumored to be a witch - and the local preacher. As the line between grim reality and the supernatural disappears, Death rides the ridgetops on a pale horse, and the Devil's hound haunts the backwoods. Ephraim must decide who to trust, evade the hangman's noose, and find redemption.

A story like this combines the best of the familiar bad guys (Death and the Devil) and gives a fresh new angle on the desire for redemption and what we are willing to do for love and forgiveness. The tale is well paced and kept me entertained throughout.

Some of my favorite aspects of this book are Bauserman's use of dialect, and the interesting rules for magic. He captures the feel of Appalachia with some great turns of phrase. It felt authentic even in this fantasy, gothic tale. Some ways of speaking had me chuckling as I drove along listening to this book.

My daughters ages 11 and 13 really liked the story as well. It's spooky, but not so scary that I would be uncomfortable with my children enjoying it with me. I'd recommend it for teens and adults too. The reader did a FANTASTIC job. I'd like to look for other titles with him as well!
I'm looking forward to November Witch next.

I can't wait for the second book in this series!

What a great book. Part supernatural thriller, part redemption story, and completely entertaining. The narrator was fantastic as well. Eagerly awaiting more in this series.

Outstanding new series

The story started just a little slow, not boring, but the author really built the entire mountain setting and characters. Narrator did really well with all the characters. The more the story got going the more interesting and exciting the book got. Really good 1st book!!!

Excellent read! Well researched with a smooth flowing story. Explanations of each "myth" or legend gracefully worked into the story line. Scary enough to keep adult readers entranced without being too traumatic for younger readers. Only advice I'd give fellow readers/listeners is...pay close attention to characters mentioned in opening chapter. Absolutely crucial so your not lost in subsequent chapters.

Excellent read. Don't miss out!!

The Devil, Death, a couple of witches and a Hell Hound thrown in go good measure.

Great dark supernatural thriller, it has it all.
