Publisher's summary

Ephraim Cutler has blood on his hands and a hellhound on his trail.

When his mother forces him to kill an innocent man, Ephraim Cutler's quiet life in the Appalachian Mountains is thrown into turmoil. With a bounty on his head, Ephraim flees to the hills and hollers, where he discovers that his crime has drawn more than the law's attention - the Devil's in town with his eye on Ephraim's soul. Desperate to escape, Ephraim is torn between two clashing figures: an outcast granny doctor rumored to be a witch - and the local preacher. As the line between grim reality and the supernatural disappears, Death rides the ridgetops on a pale horse, and the Devil's hound haunts the backwoods. Ephraim must decide who to trust, evade the hangman's noose, and find redemption.

I can't wait for the second book in this series!

A story like this combines the best of the familiar bad guys (Death and the Devil) and gives a fresh new angle on the desire for redemption and what we are willing to do for love and forgiveness. The tale is well paced and kept me entertained throughout.

Some of my favorite aspects of this book are Bauserman's use of dialect, and the interesting rules for magic. He captures the feel of Appalachia with some great turns of phrase. It felt authentic even in this fantasy, gothic tale. Some ways of speaking had me chuckling as I drove along listening to this book.

My daughters ages 11 and 13 really liked the story as well. It's spooky, but not so scary that I would be uncomfortable with my children enjoying it with me. I'd recommend it for teens and adults too. The reader did a FANTASTIC job. I'd like to look for other titles with him as well!
I'm looking forward to November Witch next.

Outstanding new series

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

What a great book. Part supernatural thriller, part redemption story, and completely entertaining. The narrator was fantastic as well. Eagerly awaiting more in this series.

I enjoyed this book

The story was engaging and enjoyable. It is a good read for all ages and would appeal to anyone who either like Westerns (it doesn't take place in the West but it has the feel of a Western), supernatural stories, or both. over all I would recommend this to a friend.

A pale white horse

I really enjoyed this book, it had a little of everything. A witch, the devil, death, A mysterious reverend, and a goat. A post civil war teenage love story with plenty of perils facing them. I think everyone should read this book. It is a really good book.

Great Start~

If you could sum up Some Dark Holler in three words, what would they be?

Backwoods Supernatural Showdown

What was one of the most memorable moments of Some Dark Holler?

I think one of the most memorable moments for me would be the conversation Ephraim had with his mother.

Which character – as performed by Bernard Setaro Clark – was your favorite?

I think my favorite character was Barefoot Nancy. The narrator did a good job bringing her to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I got very into the book listening to it in my car. I definitely started yelling to the characters on my drive home.

Any additional comments?

I am very excited for the next book in the series!

Really good 1st book

The story started just a little slow, not boring, but the author really built the entire mountain setting and characters. Narrator did really well with all the characters. The more the story got going the more interesting and exciting the book got. Really good 1st book!!!

Excellent read. Don't miss out!!

Excellent read! Well researched with a smooth flowing story. Explanations of each "myth" or legend gracefully worked into the story line. Scary enough to keep adult readers entranced without being too traumatic for younger readers. Only advice I'd give fellow readers/listeners is...pay close attention to characters mentioned in opening chapter. Absolutely crucial so your not lost in subsequent chapters.

Great dark supernatural thriller, it has it all.

The Devil, Death, a couple of witches and a Hell Hound thrown in go good measure.

Great start to a new series

The first book in this series was a great start to set up the world and the characters involved in it. I really liked Ephraim and I'm excited to see what happens on his next journey! The narration was great as well!

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
